One of the best models released by Archos a 160GB hard drive holds lots of films, music, photos, even use it to back up a computer whether it be a mac or windows it is compatible with both. What has been added to this series is the wi-fi facility if you have broadband you can sit and pick up the internet and surf the web or even in any hotspots. It's the ideal machine if you have long journeys it's light portable and the 4.5" screen is crystal clear having had the previous model to this one which had half the memory they have certainly surpassed themselves at Archos it's easy to use and stores masses of data whatever you want to put on it.

The first product turned up promptly and on time. I then took it out of the box to prepare it for my dad for Christmas. When I took it out of the box I read the instructions and I told you to charge it via the USB cable and leave it for at least 4 hours (I think it was 4 hours). I plugged the Archos in and expected it not to do anything other than the charging light to light up, but no. The charging light lit up and Archos turned it's self on and got very hot very quick. The screen then confronted me with and error code 101 with three options for me to pick from. It didn't matter which option I picked It just didn't seem to work.

I then scoured the internet for twenty mins and found a rather interesting forum on the error. Lots of people had different quick fix methods saying: do this, do that, It worked for me. Well it shouldn't have. The error code 101 is displayed because the Archos has 'cooked/fried' it's own HDD. This means that no matter what you do it will not fix it. I have also found out why the Archos does this. Apparently (it's sounds viable but I cant' confirm it's true) Archos wrote a dodgy firmware for the 605 WIFI which mad it read the HDD too quick, which in turn 'cooked/fried' the HDD. Archos have now rectified the problem in the firmware and are now sending products out with the new working firmware.

My advice to any person receiving this problem is to get straight in contact with the seller tell them that you have received error code 101 and that you are requesting a replacement.

I have now a replacement product and it seems to be very good. As yet I have had no problems and the vids and mp3's are great.

Hope you don't end up with the same problem.

What I wanted - a simple device to backup and store all my music collection and other media so they could be accesses from the sofa via the TV.
The Achos is great for this and relatively simple to use once set up. You need to buy the docking bay and figure out how to play music via the TV and the HiFi at the same time (basically set up docking station for the TV and connect HiFi via the headphones jack)
it doesn't get 5 stars because

* The instructions are terrible. There is a short paper overview document but the detail is on a set of pdfs installed on the machine. The instructions are not exact enough and don't cover some basic tasks.
* Synchronisation is not exact or and this causes problems with file names and carefully crafted playlists.
* When watched on the TV it has a slightly 1995 look to it. A good look but just dated.
