Despite what some other reviewers have stated about the other Philips GoGear range of MP3/MP4 players, I am pleased to say that this compact 2GB player is great. The menus are very easy to use and navigation between them is smooth and purposeful. The instructions are easy to follow and the supplied software is more than adequate - do follow the installation instructions exactly and ensure that the software is installed BEFORE you plug the unit into the USB port of your PC/laptop! Once installed, you simply connect the player to the USB port of your PC/laptop and at this point it is worth leaving it alone for at least 20 minutes to charge before attempting to use the software.

You do need to install Windows Media player version 11, which is included on the supplied CD-ROM. This was not much hassle for me as I was already using version 10. However, if you have a much earlier version, the changes to the layout of the program may be a little bit shocking for some! I would advise that you immediately go to the Windows update site to get the latest updates and patches for Windows Media player. For anyone who has not used the Windows site for ages or who previously instructed the site to remove specific downloads in the past, it is worth looking for some updates that were issued in 2006/2007, which address a few problems with connecting MP3/MP4 players to Windows Media player. This is especially true if you use DRM protected tracks on this player, as some will not transfer properly from your PC to the player without these updates/fixes.

I have had the unit for a week now and it really does the biz! It seems to hold its charge well and the supplied headphones, not being the highest quality that money can buy, are nonetheless very good and more than adequate for everyday use, while out-and-about - I intend to buy a very decent set for use while relaxing at home!

After only a week of use, I cannot find any real fault with this unit. The only issue I had was with trying to use the buttons while the unit was in my pocket. Having large hands doesn't help but with a little patience, I can now manipulate the buttons without looking at the unit's screen and this shows how easy the menus are to use.

In summary, you could spend double the money on an iPod but this little unit is great, works well, is very good quality and excellent value for money.
