5.0 out of 5 stars A great mixture of new and old, 30 Jun 2007
A good mixture of more well-known and newer artists, this cd has some choices on it to please fans of Ms Nightingale's Radio 1 show and bring in new listeners.
Tracks which stand out include: K-Swing & Beber's "This was the Sound", remixed by Adam Freeland, a get up and dance anthem if ever there was one; Codex Machine's "Love Requiem", with its striking originality successfully taking the boundaries of breakbeat even further; Orange Blossom's "Cheft El Khof", which is sublime listening for a summer's evening; The Orb/Alan Parker's "Grey Clouds", comic genius meeting musical genius. Although unmixed, it is still well structured and an excellent addition to the Y4K series.

4.0 out of 5 stars DJ-friendly rolling breaks from a legend, 18 Jun 2007
By Mr. Stuart Bruce "DonQuibeats" (Cardiff, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Radio 1 and breakbeat scene legend Annie Nightingale's first compilation in many years is a cross-section of the rolling breaks music that she plays on her late-night Radio 1 show, so if you've heard her radio show lately you'll recognise a bunch of these tracks.

There are some great records from Stanton Warriors, Sunz Of Mecha, Plump DJs, and Drumattic Twins. The Alan Parker vs The Orb track at the end is a little glimpse of Annie's sense of humour.

This is one of the first (possibly the first?) Y4K compilations to be UNMIXED, so you get each track in its full DJ-friendly glory. I think some of the tracks have been edited a touch but you can still mix with them, which is a great bonus.

My criticism would be that I don't understand what Annie finds so great about some of the tracks- the tracks by Codex Machine and Orange Blossom sound a bit home-made, they use dated and weak-sounding beats, and they sound flimsy compared to some of the other tracks here. So, not a perfect selection of tracks but pretty darn good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring breaks for die hards only, 26 Oct 2008
By Krisman (Ipswich, UK) - See all my reviews
I love the Y3K and Y4K collections and was looking forward to hearing a selection of tunes from the Queen of breakbeat. I listened with great anticipation but unfortunately it was not worth the wait. The compilation is lackluster and fails to deliver anything new or interesting. Just very basic 'nice' tunes that are completely forgettable. For someone who is continually praised for her good ear for breaks this is very disappointing.
