Product Description

Romantic comedy starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jack Black. Iris (Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda (Diaz) realises the man she lives with has been unfaithful. Two women who have never met and live 6000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Iris moves into Amanda's L.A. house in sunny California as Amanda arrives in the snow-covered English countryside. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris' handsome brother Graham (Law) and Iris, with inspiration provided by legendary screenwriter Arthur (Eri Wallach), mends her heart when she meets film composer Miles (Black).

From Amazon.co.uk

As a pleasant dose of holiday cheer, The Holiday is a lovable love story with all the Christmas trimmings. In the capable hands of writer-director Nancy Meyers (making her first romantic comedy since Something's Gotta Give), it all begins when two successful yet unhappy women connect through a home-swapping website, and decide to trade houses for the Christmas holiday in a mutual effort to forget their man troubles. Iris (Kate Winslet) is a London-based journalist who lives in a picture-postcard cottage in Surrey, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) owns a movie-trailer production company (leading her to cutely imagine most of her life as a "coming attraction") and lives in a posh mansion in Beverly Hills. Iris is heartbroken from unrequited love with a cad of a colleague (Rufus Sewell), and Amanda has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend (Edward Burns), so their home-swapping offers mutual downtime to reassess their love lives. This being a Nancy Meyers movie (where everything is fabulously decorated and romantic wish-fulfillment is virtually guaranteed), Amanda hooks up with Iris's charming brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris is unexpectedly smitten with Miles (Jack Black), a super-nice film composer on the downside of a failing relationship. --Jeff Shannon

The Holiday is a great romantic comedy set in two locations; Surrey, England and L.A, USA. When Amanda (Cameron Diaz) breaks up with her cheating boyfriend, she decides she needs to get away from it all so she searches online for 'vaction hotspots'. While trawling through the internet, she comes across a House Exchange, where she meets Iris, a writer for the Times who also wants to get away from it all. The two decide to swap houses for two weeks, so Iris jets off to L.A while Amanda is stuck in Snowy Surrey (albeit fake snow, and rather recognisable fake snow at that).

The film is full of laughs, and all the actors involved put up a good performance. Despite half the movie being set in the snow, it manages to help you forget about your own snow trouble you're currently suffering through. For me personally though, I would have loved to have seen a movie just about Iris' time in L.A.

All in all a definite must have in your movie collection.

Not your laugh-out-loud kind of romantic comedy but just a nice bit of entertainment for an evening. Definitely scores high on the feel-good factor and the acting is nicely balanced and natural too. Don't expect any shocking moments, courseness or crudity..... gentle enough for my mother to watch.

Not my usual kind of flick (mid-thirties male with an enthusiasm for thrillers) but rapidly turned into one of my favourites and found a place on the shelf with my Bourne DVDs.

I love this film!! It is a fantastic christmas chick flick movie. Actually...it doesn't even have to be christmas and my husband likes it too. It's funny, romantic, the odd couplings are wonderful & it always gets me in the mood for christmas. I actually bought this movie when it first came out but I lent it to someone..can't remember who & they won't own up so here I am buying it again as I can't go for 1 Christmas without it. Buy it & enjoy!! Merry Christmas.

I have to admit, this was a film that snuck up on me and it has become one of my favourite feel good films.

Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz excel as the unlucky in love Iris and Amanda who decide, after respectively bad love affairs, to pack their bags and house swap between Iris's quaint Surrey cottage and Amanda's palatial Los Angeles mansion in the Christmas holiday season.

I know that I call this a festive flick, but in reality the Christmas period is really there to provide a finite time period to the leads' eventual romances which build to a fitting climax.

The supporting cast are also excellent, particularly Jack Black and Jude Law as Iris and Amanda's eventual love interests and the fantastic Eli Wallach as the elderly Hollywood scriptwriter who befriends and eventually has a major impact on Iris's eventual happiness.

The only downside is the lack of extras, but this is easily looked over by the film itself and the performances of it's actors. (How nobody else has cast Jack Black as a proper rom-com leading man following this film is a puzzle to this reviewer).

If you're after a film that is warm and fuzzy, particularly in this cold weather, then give this film a try.

P.S. - You will never see Mr Brightside by The Killers in the same light again after this film.

I cannot recomend this film enough! It's funny, its romanitc and an all round great film. The sound track has something that makes you want to play it all over again. Jude Law, Jack Black and Kate Winslet all gave brilliant performances, Cameron's however, lacked the certain pizaz that she ususally has. But over all, one cracking Christmas film!

I watch this movie every time it is on TV - it seems to run in a continuous loop along with other movies (I love The Wedding Date). You really do have to suspend belief as there is no way you could swap homes in 24 hours and do everything that happens within the two weeks of the holiday. It all falls into place too easily but once you accept that it isn't real (doh!) you can fall into the myth of the story. Cameron Diaz is disgustingly gorgeous looking (if a bit too slim) and Kate Winslet is so lovingly practical (get the sick bag out!). I never really liked Jude Law until I watched this but he is rather nice. Jack Black (that's his name isn't it? Shows how much attention I pay) is just as cute as Jude Law.......in his own way so the pairing of the two couples is well cast and well played.
Not a substitute for a 'serious' film but switch off and enjoy make believe.

I saw The Holiday at a friend's sleepover.I had high expectations, since the cast was so exceptional!I liked all the actors - Jack Black was hilarious in School Of Rock,Kate Winslet was tear-jerking in Titanic,Cameron Diaz great in all the movies she's been in(especially There's something about Mary)and Jude Law was fab in Alfie. What more could you ask for? I had expected a real chick-flick but it was much more intellectual if you ask me.The part with the old man(forgot his name unforunately!)excepting the award was so heart warming! Cameron Diaz falling for Jude Law was so touching, what with his past and all(i shan't give the story away!) and Jack Black and Kate Winslet fitted so well together. This movie is perfect for a girly night in,but then again i think boys would enjoy it to! My advice: Buy it.It's unlikely you won't enjoy it!

thanks for reading..
