5.0 out of 5 stars Discipline!, 20 Aug 2009
By K MClure (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
By 1981 Robert Fripp had decided to form another band following his work with Peter Gabriel (notably Peter Gabriel, a woefully under-ratted album)solo work on Exposureand his proto-new wave band The League of Gentlemen (God Save the King). He was clearly wanting to avoid raising expectations or tarnish the King Crimson legacy so that initially this new band was titled Discipline.

Disc one here represents that bands' very first gig in a very small venue in Bath. It was a bootleg recording on a cassette recorder (not hi-tech at all) so the sound quality is not brilliant, however, it does represent a crucial period in the life of the this legendary band. Robert famously later described driving along and being visited by the spirit of King Crimson and it was then that he knew that this new band was indeed the new King Crimson line-up. This recording demonstrates, however, that they were playing Red and Larks Tongues in Aspic from their very first gig so I guess they were always really going to be KC but Robert probably just wanted to give himself the safety net of being able to say that this was a different band if it didn't come together properly. This is the sound of a band finding it's feet and so Adrian Belew's vocals are a bit ropey in places but as a document of the rebirth of one of the most important bands to arise in the late 60s early 70s Rock era this is priceless stuff.

Disc two is the middle, Beat, period of the 1980s King Crimson at the height of their powers. This is taken from an 8 track recording and therefore the sound quality is excellent. Everyone is on form and it is well worth having.
