Synopsis

Open Season, an animated action-adventure, follows the fortunes of two forest-animal misfits. Boog (Martin Lawrence) is a gentle and domesticated bear; Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) is an absentminded and accident-prone deer who has been shunned by his herd. Together, they struggle to adapt to the ways of life in the wild and on their own. Boog longs to return to the cushy conditions he had with Beth (Debra Messing), an animal-loving park ranger who rescued him and raised him as a pet from the time he was a cub. Desperate to please his new friend, who spared him from an overzealous hunter (Gary Sinise), Elliot tries to help lead Boog back to the mountainside town, but instead they are met with hostility by their fellow forest creatures, including a combative squirrel, McSquizzy (Billy Connelly); a perfectionist beaver, Reilly (Jon Favreau); and a machismo-fuelled deer, Ian (Patrick Warburton), who is Elliot's nemesis. Now, with hunting season upon them, they must all align to defend themselves against the hunters that annually plague their domain. While obviously geared toward kids, Open Season covers quite a few adult themes, including the comparison of man and beast. By pitting animals against hunters, the film operates from a pro-animal and pro-environment stance. It also conveys the importance of getting along with those different from ourselves, and encourages teamwork and acceptance of others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice picture quality, story a bit weak, 26 Nov 2007
This movie is a perfect way to show off your hi-def equipment. The blu-ray film is superb, presented in 1080p with excellent sharpness and good saturation without being washed out. The sound quality varies between good and ok, I thought the voices were a little lost sometimes during action sequences.

The story is a bit weak and over simplified, but you get what you expect, some funny sequences, some beautifully crafted scenery and some sad parts. It's suitable for all the family with some jokes for grown ups too.

Five stars for picture quality, three for the sound and three for the story. If you are not sure about this movie, you should buy it just to see what blu-ray video is capable of.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rent it instead!, 3 Dec 2008

Ths film has a pretty weak, predictable and linear story with little character depth. What does the bluray quality matter if you only ever watch it once? I recommend renting this one instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Picture Quality, 17 Jan 2010
By Mr. James West "Nebulous" (Aberdeen, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Open Season is an entertaining tale, with some good dialogue. The story is basically one of a domesticated bear who has to make his way in the wilds with a bit of help from a deer with attitude. Up against him is a hunter, who is determined to stop him. Our children, and other children we know loved it - with the adults more mixed in their views.

Where it does excel however on Bluray is in picture quality. It's amazing when his owner roars at him to see his hair ruffle and part with the force of her output.

There are some interesting extras on the disc as well, particularly explaining the amount of effort that went into creating hundreds of thousands of individual hair on the animals, all acting individually.
