4.0 out of 5 stars not just funny..., 7 Nov 2008
By Lucy E. Standon "Moochiphur" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
So, Little Miss Sunshine. I have to admit that when I first watched this movie I thought that it would be one of those American Independent Comedies that, like Napoleon Dynamite would be really funny in that...not laugh out loud, serial kind of way, but in fact Little Miss Sunshine is so much more, and in fact it has some of the darkest comedy I have encountered in a US movie. Little Miss Sunshine is the story of a five misfits held together only by blood who must take a road trip across America in a beat up VW bus to a Little Miss America contest. Although this films sounds light hearted, and to be honest a little dull and silly this film uses the very simple storyline to build on the characters and situations. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you cry. A lot of the conversation in this film makes you smile through gritted teeth. These people, these characters are so out of touch, so detached from the norm, while being so rooted in reality that at points the complete lack of empathy is really quite painful, however, this film is strangely light hearted, and even the most hateable ridiculous characters grow on one along the way. This road movie come family drama is a work of genius and pulls at every emotional string you can muster. The choice of music, and indeed the lack there of is brilliantly constructive. This film has a definite sense of style while concentrating in quite a genuine way on the content. I really do recommend this film to anyone who likes watching people and enjoy films that unfold slowly with great care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously funny!, 9 Mar 2007
By Akasha K. (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
Little Miss Sunshine is absolutely funny movie that takes you on an odd journey with a strange family. You easily fall in love with the characters and the storyline is uplifting. It makes you laugh and touches your heart in many ways.

I highly recommend this movie and for some reading try a novel by Deborah Morrison & Arvind Singh called Nexus. It's an uplifting tale of people drawn to a spiritual retreat to overcome pain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little ray of sunshine :-), 12 Jul 2007

This film starts kinda slow and it takes a while before you warm to the excellent characters, especially 'Olive' and 'Dwayne,' but before long you begin to get the dark subtle humour of a wonderful piece of sardonically scripted, satirically hilarious poke at American candy culture.
Really enjoyed this film, Dayton and Faris should have been making feature films years ago, roll on the next one.

Sco
