Synopsis

With breathtaking cinematography and state-of-the-art visual effects Galapagos takes you to the islands that changed the world. Sitting at a confluence of four major ocean currents, the islands are actually the summits of vast undersea volcanoes, and are steadily on the march. How has such an odd assortment of life managed to find a footing in this unruly world? Micro-climates and altitude have combined to form discrete environmental zones: perfect habitats for the islands' diverse fauna - marine iguanas, petrels, blue-footed boobies and giant tortoises being but a famous few.

Galapagos is a rare insight into an incredible landscape, a natural laboratory and an exquisite evolutionary habitat that Darwin described as a 'world within itself'. Witness the volcanic eruption that leads to an island’s creation, right through to its ultimate demise. Galapagos is an Earth-shattering experience that must be seen to be believed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb camera work, great story , 1 Mar 2007

This series used spectacular Hi-Definition cinematography from land, sea and air, and blended dramatic landscapes with intimate animal behaviour, drama reconstruction and stunning satellite imagery.

This is a stunning BBC documentary - if you like BBC wildlife stuff then this is for you. The islands are like nowhere on earth - hence the documentary.

All the usual BBC values are present so buy with confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparatory DVD for a trip to the Galapagos..., 13 May 2007

This BBC documentary is a must for anyone interested in wildlife and the Galapagos. I used it to help prepare myself for a visitor to the islands and now I watch it to remind myself of the wonderful sights I saw while I was there. It is fully up to the very high standards that you would expect from a BBC production and I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best HD title ever produced?, 22 Dec 2007
By Master Baker "Mong" (Narnia, Wardrobe.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Galapagos [HD DVD] [2006] (HD DVD)
In terms of visual quality, YES. Shot entirely in 1080 HD video at 30 frames per second, this makes 'Planet Earth' look like a juddery, grainy mess. There is not a single bad shot in the whole series, every scene is smooth as silk, beautifully lit & composed, and as sharp as your screen can produce. Viewed at 1080P using Full Pixel mode (Bravia LCD) it is startlingly clear...pausing any close-up shot gives you an image that looks like a National Geographic photo.

The actual content is not as impressive or interesting as 'Planet Earth', but it comes a close second.

However, after watching this you will undoubtedly be left wishing that Planet Earth (and any other current HD-DVD, to be honest) could have looked this good. If you want to impress people with your new HD-DVD player, you have to own this.
