Synopsis

The madcap antics of Count Duckula have found an approving audience among both children and adults. This release contains the entire first season of the show, with the Count and his friends providing animated entertainment in 26 episodes. Revived after receiving a near-fatal stake in his heart, Count Duckula awakes to a brand new existence when he realizes his butler and maid have carried out a transfusion with ketchup instead of blood! Putting his devious past behind him, the ketchup-fueled Count becomes a vegetarian, and sets off on a series of adventures across the globe--a wonderfully inventive premise for a show. The subsequent episodes more than live up to expectations as the Count and his cohorts head off in search of fame and fortune--with humorous results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally....top cartoon is given a proper DVD release!, 28 Aug 2006
A Vegetarian Vampire Duck who is terrified of the sight of blood, owns a teleporting Transylvanian castle and yearns to be a stage performer? Who thinks of these things? Cosgrove Hall; of course. They are absolute geniuses.

The Broccoli Sandwich loving Duck begins his adventures with his dour and poe-faced, sarcastic Vulture of a butler; Igor, and his intellectually challenged, soft-hearted fat hen of a Nanny, who, with her screechy voice and tendency to demolish everything she touches provides a good deal of the gags. Duckula is not completely safe from harm though - he has a foe in the name of Dr Von Goosewing, a dedicated, but misguided, inventor and Vampire-hunter, who just won't rest until he has managed to drive a stake through Duckula's heart. (Poor Von Goosewing doesn't realise of course, that due to a mistake in the spell cast in bringing back the Vampire, this incarnation of Count Duckula is 100% vegetarian and hasn't as much gone near a ham sandwich, let alone bitten anyone on the neck!)

The first series contains some of the very best episodes - including "One Stormy Night" - a parody of Frankenstein, "Dr Goosewing and Mr Duck" - a parody of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, "No Sax Please, we're Egyptian" - where Duckula goes to Egypt - Indiana Jones style to search for the mystical magic saxophone, ...

Complete list of episodes in this 3 disc DVD set:

1. No Sax Please: We're Egyptian
2. Vampire Vacation
3. One Stormy Night
4. Transylvanian Homesick Blues
5. Restoration Comedy
6. Mutinous Penguins
7. Dr. Von Goosewing's Invisible Ray
8. Down Under Duckula
9. All in a Fog
10. Castle Duckula: Open to the Public
11. The Ghost of McCastle McDuckula
12. Igor's Busy Day
13. Autoduck
14. The Vampire Strikes Back
15. Hardluck Hotel
16. The Hunchbudgie of Notre Dame
17. Dear Diary
18. Rent a Butler
19. Jungle Duck
20. Mobile Home
21. A Fright at the Opera
22. Dr. Goosewing and Mr. Duck
23. Town Hall Terrors
24. Sawdust Ring
25. Duck and the Broccoli Stalk
26. Family Reunion

Anyone who remembers this Eighties gem from your younger years, anyone who wants to buy a intelligent, quality animated British cartoon that you'll love watching as much as your kids do, definitely buy this set; there is certainly "no one zanier in Transylvania!"

Kids around the ages of 7 upwards will probably understand the stories better than the little'uns, and the adults will also appreciate the word play and black humour, and have chuckle at Barry Clayton's dark and gloriously melodramatic commentary at the beginning and end of each episode.

Added to this is the best intro and end music lyrics a cartoon has ever seen - sing along, if you dare!

Oh, and "Goodnight out there....whatever you are....."

5.0 out of 5 stars What Can One Say!, 27 Aug 2006
By M. D. Hart "Boz Phiz @ DVD" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Count Duckula was one of my favourite cartoons when I was a boy and when I saw that the complete First Series was being released by Fremantle I got all excited and couldn't wait for it to arrive! We have been teased for years with the other Duckula DVD that was released with only a few episodes on it, but now you don't have to feel that anymore! What we have here at a basic level is all 26 episodes from the First Series of the vegetarian vampire's escapades, presented on 3-discs. The packing is the type of fold-out style box with a slip-case and is a pretty good effort for a show that wasn't guaranteed to sell a single copy. Also pleasantly surprising is the quality of the transfer... all 26 episodes are of a high standard visually and in terms of sound so you wont be disappointed there! Also with this package comes a decent set of special features, which you wouldn't normally expect with a children's cartoon series, as well as attractive and simple-to-use interactive menus. There really isn't any more to be said about this box; it is for adults with an eye for nostalgia and will appeal to kids of this generation as well... and remember, Duckula is voiced in every episode by the one and only David Jason. What more could you want? Let's hope now that further series follow onto DVD at the same standard

5.0 out of 5 stars Cartoon Perfection!, 25 Feb 2007
By Mr. M. Sheldon "shelders" (Nuneaton, Warks) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Count Duckula takes me straight back to my childhood. Getting home from school, sitting down with some orange squash and maybe, just maybe a few choccy biscuits! Settle in and watch CITV for abit of Count Duckula action - SUPERB.
Having had a VHS video of Count Duckula I really, really, really hoped they would commission a DVD(s) and we can thank the Good Lord, they finally did. This cartoon is perfection in its purist form. They simply can't or won't make another one as good as this one. You know your in for a treat when the lead character is being voiced by the master himself, David Jason (Danger Mouse and Wind In The Willows).
The humour hasn't been lost in the many years since I last saw it as a kid, laughing out loud and smiling all the way through every episode. You somehow appreciate it that little bit more when you watch it as an adult. If you have kids (probably ages 7+) then please buy this as a birthday or xmas prezzy. They may look at you and think " oh dear, what have they gone and purchased here"? But trust me, they'll adore it (I realise I'm asking you to trust someone you dont even know - but hey, it works for Doctor's around the world). The only trouble is they'll want to watch it over and over and over again, but you wont mind because you will too!

Writing this review leaves me slightly troubled with two questions:

1. Why cant all cartoons be as good/funny as this??
2. Will CITV consider re-running the originals??

A complete must buy......oh, and the 2nd season is out on 26th March 2007!
