4.0 out of 5 stars This sun rises to the occasion, 16 Feb 2008
By Alsom "24/7 Film Fan" (London, England) - See all my reviews
This thoughtful, slow-moving account of expatriates in Parisian 1920's, at 129 minutes, perhaps does require some stamina, but Ernest Hemingway's troubled characters are played by some top drawer names of the time including, Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer and Errol Flynn, in a film-stealing performance as a souse. This was to be the last of Flynn's notable performances; one that mirrored the star in reality. Overall, this 1957 classic does boast beautiful colour, stunning scenery and an appropriately prominent musical score by Hugo Friedhofer. A worthwhile presentaton.

Yes, the transfer is very good. Yes, Errol Flynn steals the show. Yes, the locations are very good. True to the book? Not exactly. My advice :- Read the book before watching this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fiesta. The sun also rises., 7 Jan 2010
By T. Stonehouse - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In general, I don't care much for old films, but I make an exception for this one. Partly, I imagine, it is because I first saw it in the original 1957 cinemascope format at a good quality cinema. Of course it isn't the same as a DVD on a domestic television set, but nevertheless I still found it a pleasure to watch. It follows reasonably closely Hemingway's novel on which it is based, so, if you like Hemingway, you will probably enjoy this film. (NB)The bull fight scenes are sanitized, but if you are totally opposed, this isn't for you.
