Incredible!, 28 Nov 2006
I have owned the Logitech x-230 2.1 speakers for a year now, and although they are a very nice set of speakers, they weren't quite powerful enough. I am currently in university accomodation, and house parties are quite the norm now. My x-230's were perfect for personal listening in a moderate-sized room but not for an entire house party.
After looking around for a more powerful set, and reading a hell of a lot of reviews, I decided to upgrade to these beauties. They were delivered in one day, and the box is about the same size as a decently sized portable television, weighing a bit more than you'd expect. They were very well packaged, there's no way they could be damaged in transit.
I brought them back to university accomodation, and set them up besides my x-230's. I did a comprison with the speakers, using various types of music and wow, they have a much warmer, purer sound to them. I am actually very surprised how good they do sound, the subwoofer really drives a good backbone to the pure, crisp sound that is driven out of the satellites. I have adjusted my equilizer slightly but that's only because I prefer a richer, deeper sound as opposed to a clearer, pure sound. You don't have to adjust your equilizer to enjoy some good music with these. I know it sounds strange but the speakers tend to sound even better with clasical and orchestra music. Metal music and songs with a lot of bass also sound great.
I played around with the subwoofer and found the best place for it is right in the corner of the room on the floor, opposite to the door of the room. With this, output of the subwoofer seems to increase, which is nice.
With the speakers set up, it's worth noting that the cables aren't very long. The cable length from subwoofer to satellites is about 1.5m, which pretty much means the subwoofer needs to be stationed under your desk or somewhere pretty close to the computer. I've tried music games and movies with the speakers and as good as they really are with music, they are trully superb with games and action movies. I played Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun with these and both sound effects and soundtrack was pretty superb. Indiana Jones played very well, not as good as a 5.1 system, but pretty damn good for a 2.1!
The overall build quality to these is very good, everything is very sturdy and looks like it was made with pure love. The control pad is a very handy addition to my desk, with the master volume & bass volume controls along with the on/off button and headphone jack located on there. I should warn that these are pretty damn loud. I've put my computer volume down to half, and with the master volume on 3/4 and the bass on 1/2 on the control pad (effectively meaning 6/16th of the satellites and 3/16th of the woofer (as woofer volume is affected by master volume too), thus 53 watts of the total 200), it is simply too loud to handle. I can't imagine what anything above 100 watts will sound like, but at the 53 watts I've had it on, the music could be heard clearly at 2 floors above my room, with doors open.
Overall, the satellites are clean and pure and the subwoofer is punchy and demonic. All-in-all, this is a system with enough quality to suit the living room and it's more than loud enough for a one-floor (or maybe two) houseparty, distortion-free. And for £92 these are certainly well worth the price.
---
Pros: Lovely clean sound from the satellites well complimented with the powerful subwoofer. Good build quality as you'd expect from Logitech, and what an awesome price too.
Cons: Relatively short cables for the satellites, limiting some setups if you want them on bookshelves or around the room away from the 'woofer.
Sound Quality: 9/10
Build Quality: 9/10
Power: 9/10
Value: 10/10
Awesome product.

Superb, 20 Oct 2006
Just got the speakers this morning, which were delivered a day earlier than the specified date.
I was expecting a big box having read other reviews, but I really wasn't expecting it to be this big. Unpacked the speakers and subwoofer and set it all up in less than 5 minutes. Be warned the subwoofer really is HUGE. I would recommend checking the dimensions before you buy this, because if you are short of space then this system may not be for you.
I played a few songs and found that the mid-high ranges were a bit lacking but the low and high ends are crystal clear. I then tried a few DVD's and they were fantastic, just as good as any 5.1 or 7.1 system. These speakers are better suited to films than to music, but unless you are a music conniseur then the difference is barely noticeable, and could probably be improved anyway with a better sound card.
Distortion can be a big problem with the subwoofer if you don't situate it on the right surface (i.e. the floor), but if you do situate it properly then distorion will only be noticeable at ear-bleeding levels.
Believe me, even on 1/2 volume this system will make you feel like you've been hit by a truck. The volume output is tremendous!!!!!!
A few reviews complained about the length of the cables, but I found them to be OK. If you want the speakers near your computer then you won't have any problems. If you want to set them up on the other side of the room then I suggest that you get a 5.1 or 7.1 system instead.
Build quality is a big plus point. It would cost at least double to find a system of equal build quality.
Overall :-
Sound Qulity 8/10
Build Quality 9/10
Appearance 10/10
Blow the neighbours away factor 10/10
Price 10/10
If you are reading this review with a view on buying a new set of 2.1 speakers then stop right now!! just go and buy them, because you won't find anything better for the same or even similar price.

Not for scary films!, 21 April 2006
I read the reviews and noticed the excellent price. One of my old plastic PC speakers had got all crackly so I was in the market for a replacement. I DIDN'T want a mass of speakers and (more) wires everywhere, so these seemed to fit the bill. Smallish silvery left and right speakers complemented the silvery flat screen monitor we got at Christmas. The (huge!) bass unit went under the desk - the whole thing was easy to connect and the silvery control unit has a cool blue light to show you when its on.
So - looks? 5 stars.
Sound? My overwhelming thought was why hadn't I done this before! The sound was just brilliant - I tried some mp3's but just couldn't stop listening - it felt as though I was hearing these songs for the first time. The bass unit can certainly deliver. As others have said you can now FEEL the music and sound effects, not just hear them :-) Spooky films and games - no, don't do it, it would be just too creepy and immersive!
Get 'em - you'll like 'em!
