Amazon.co.uk Review

Marry in haste, repent at leisure, goes the old adage. Certainly, The War Bride sees the chirpy Cockney Lily (Anna Friel) with plenty of time to regret her lot. After a whirlwind romance in wartime Britain she marries her handsome Canadian hunk, Charlie (Aden Young). Finding herself pregnant and alone, Charlie having been sent back to the front, she jumps at the chance of a new life abroad when she receives a one-way ticket to Canada.

Unfortunately Charlie's tales of his family ranch in Alberta are more fanciful than factual and when she gets there her natural ebullience is tested to the limit by a crumbling shack and a frostbite-inducing welcome from his widowed mother (Brenda Fricker, superbly dour) and his crippled sister (Molly Parker). They view her townie ways, her penchant for picture houses and scarlet lipstick, with deep suspicion. The only light in these dark days is derived from visits from her longstanding best friend Sophie (who also married a Canadian, but one with rather more to offer) and a burgeoning friendship with Joe, her sister-in-law's boyfriend.

The film was inspired by the experiences of screenwriter Angela Workman's mother, one of 48,000 war brides who immigrated to Canada during World War II, and it vividly demonstrates that for the unlucky ones the future was far from rosy. The result could have been mawkish but it's saved by fine performances from Friel--who is increasingly showing herself to be an actress of some versatility--and the always splendid Brenda Fricker. --Harriet Smith

Product Description

Brenda Fricker, Aden Young, Loren Dean, Julie Cox, Molly Parker With all the men away to war, Lily (Anna Friel - The Land Girls) falls madly in love and marries a handsome Canadian soldier, Charlie Travis (Aden Young - The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course). But Charlie is shipped off to the front and Lily discovers she's expecting his baby, not knowing if she will ever see him alive again. Lily receives instructions from the Canadian Embassy that she is to be shipped across the sea to her new Canadian in-laws. Life for lily is not about to improve, on arriving in Canada she is met by cold-hearted mother-in-law, Betty (Brenda Fricker - Academy Award Winner - My Left Foot) and crippled sister-in-law, Sylvia. Lily finds she has swapped one horrendous existence for another, as she struggles to survive on a dilapidated farm in the bleak Canadian wilderness. Based on a true story and winner of two Genies (Canada's Academy Award), this film is both heartfelt and funny, and will genuinely keep you engrossed till the end. 5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Friel shines again, 12 Mar 2003
By Lancaster Lucy (Norfolk, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The War Bride [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
I have just watched this film and i think it is brilliant. It begins with Lily (Anna Friel) meeting Charlie (a Canadian soldier) at a dance. She is swept off her feet and they are soon married.Charlie promises that he will get her away from London and look after her. As Charlie goes back to Europe to fight, Lily gives birth to a girl and soon after receives a letter instructing her to go and live with her Mother and Sister in-law in Canada. Charlie has led her to believe that he lives on a big Canadian ranch. However this is a slight exageration! Without giving to much away she is not made to feel welcome by any of Charlies family or friends, but wins over their friendship by just being kind and human. Just as she wins them over, Charlie returns from the war, a broken man.
The film has a happy ending, but it portrays the emotions of wartime and you feel for every character involved in the film. I cannot recommend it enough.Anna Friel was excellent(as she was in the land girls).

If you love 1940's era films, this is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth buying, 6 Jan 2008
This is excellent. It was very realistically portrayed - and managed to sensitively provide an insight into the characters, and the situations they found themselves in. Anna Friel was excellent as the lead, and was very believable in the way she adapted to the situation she found herself in - once she went to live in the USA. The other two 'love stories' within the film were both very well done - the marriage of Anna Friel's friend to the Jewish soldier and Anna Friel's sister-in-law's 'romance'. This is well worth watching, and would recommend. It's light-hearted, but manages to tackle the seriousness of the situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Colourful, Little Masterpiece , 25 Jun 2008
By Louise Amkaer (Greenland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With wild life of WW2 London: air raids, cigarets, and parties with servicemen including Canadian soldiers. Lily and her friend both fall in love with two Canadians and get married.

The newly wed husbands go off to war, and the British wives go to Canada to meet the in-laws. Lily's friend has married into a rich family and heartily welcomed, while Lily with her little daughter arrives at a demolition-ready farmhouse with the sour remark, that Charlie's (her husband) pay now goes to her.

"The War Bride" is about Lily's new life, living with Charlie's mother and sister in a place where scarlett red is too bold until Charlie comes home.

"The War Bride" has a very authentic feel to it and I love the way it is told in colours. The vibrant colours of London. The dusty neutral coulours of the farm. Peggy's (Charlie's sweetheart from before the war) pinks. Lily's scarlett red.

This was a pleasant surprise of a movie. There are strong characters, fabulous acting with Anna Friel, Molly Parker and (I forgot the actress, who plays Charlie's mother).

"The War Bride" isn't just a movie worth watching, but worth buying and seeing once in a while.

Oh yes, I also like the way "The War Bride" as a romantic drama, does NOT go over the top. That line is so thin and luckily "The War Bride" stays on the right side.

Louise.
