I thoroughly enjoy all of Daisy Goodwin's well presented, well researched programmes, seen mostly on BBC 4.This one is no exception; it's a delight from start to finish hearing some wonderful actors speak some of the most evocative poetry ever written. I only hope that at some point 'Essential Byron' will be released, a programme with the same premise as this one, with again some beautiful poetry being spoken by the cream of British stage and screen. Five stars from me.

I enjoyed this very much, and I think it's an excellent way of bringing poetry to people like me who rarely read it. It's a particular delight to hear the poems read by professionals who really know how to do it, and I found the little stories being played out (extremely well by some excellent actors) very helpful in giving context to the poetry.

Two minor things - I felt that Ms Godwin sometimes lost the balance between older and more modern poets, veering rather more towards the latter than I would have liked, but that is subjective and a matter of personal taste. More important was that unfortunately, I found Ms Godwin's commentaries intrusive, and the inclusion of details of her personal life unnecessary. Personally, I would have preferred to have her introduce each section rather than each and every poem, and then stand back and let the poetry speak for itself.
