Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Syberia II has a lot to live up to; the original Syberia did what no recent game has achieved in making the graphic adventure popular again. The peculiar plot of the game had New York lawyer Kate Walker giving up her career to help the wizened Hans Voralberg in his attempts to find Syberia--a lost land of living mammoths. This sequel picks up the story right from the end of the first, with Kate starting out in the Russian town of Romansburg in a renewed attempt to help Hans see Syberia before he dies.

The first game won its fans largely because of its well scripted storyline, which managed to make you forget the oddness of its premise and really invest in the cast of genuinely believable and engaging characters. The quality of writing is undiminished in this sequel, but the story itself is beginning to feel unnecessarily strung out with the constant stream of snowy wastelands leaving you wishing for more verdant surroundings.

The puzzles are also a bit of a step down from before, with the welcome attempt to add a greater variety of tasks and difficulty levels leading to an uncomfortable mix of traditional LucasArts-style conundrums and more trial-and-error Myst-style affairs.

Despite these misgivings Syberia II is still enjoyable, with superb production values--particularly in the excellent cut scenes. Those who have never played the original, however, should certainly start there as this slightly disappointing sequel is really one for those that want to continue the series' journey to its logical end. --David Jenkins

4.0 out of 5 stars Syberia comes to an emotional conclusion., 27 July 2004
Syberia 2 is a enjoyable continuation of Syberia, bring the story to a satisfying conclusion.

The first Syberia set a new standard for adventure games with its well thought out and original plot and fully intergrated puzzles. Syberia 2 expands on this and improves its graphics, bringing many beautifully painted locations.

The plot is immersive and there are some very emotional moments. The puzzles are all logical and most can be solved with a little lateral thinking. There is plenty of interaction required with the characters to help solve the puzzles.

The only gripe I had was that the program crashed unexpectedly a few times. Otherwise, a highly recommended alternative to the more abstract puzzles found in the Myst and Schizm series.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful graphics, 27 July 2004
By A Customer
I am well used to playing this type of adventure game(broken sword, myst, mystery of the druids etc) but this is by far my favorite of all.It has an interesting storyline, characters you can really get your teeth into and the most beautiful snowy landscapes. It even has a little bear/dog that follows you around. You don't get shot at every 5 minutes and the puzzles are more common sense then hard.In a word(or two)...pure pleasure!

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy follow up, 16 July 2004
By D. R. Clarke - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Syberia 2 is a worthy follow up to the original, though its rather idiosyncratic plot may not make a great deal of sense to anyone who has not played the first game. Unlike some, I found the puzzles in this game easier than in the first, probably because they seemed to be integrated far better into the overall flow of the game. Visually it is still an outstanding achievement and you often find yourself looking forward to the next cut scene. In terms of plot, however, I was less convinced. I had some difficulty grasping exactly why Kate went out of her way to allow Hans to fulfil his dream. As she waved him off in the final sequence, surely she must have been thinking, 'why on earth did I do all this and how am I going to get out of here'. But at the end of the day, Sokal remains one of adventure gaming's most poetic talents, so I will let him off and still give it four stars.
