Product Description

Comes With A Smile , #15, Summer 2004

"...a breezy, colourful and thoroughly hard-worked-out album with songs that deserve repeated playing."

Album Description

The origins of Soap Star Joe can be traced back to 1996 when they were originally known as God Is My Co-Pilot and made a big impression on the Sydney music scene with their Australian-centric appealingly skewed pop leanings. Their first and only released recording under that name was on the Antfarm Records compilation ‘Cop It Sweet’ in 1997, an album conceived as a showcase of Australia's young and unsigned artists that also included The Orange Humble Band. Soon afterwards they discovered there was already a US band named God Is My Co-Pilot so changed their name to Soap Star Joe, inspired by a track from Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville album. Since then Soap Star Joe have endeared themselves to many with songs of family holidays, suburban adolescence and infamous rugby league personalities – and that’s just a handful of the subjects that have peppered their set list over the years. Although the band’s personnel has fluctuated a few times, singer/songwriter Mick Wilson has always remained at the core and the line-up has now stabilised with Saul Foster on drums and Dave Keys on bass, who is also a member of Jason Walker’s band The Last Drinks. Following a number of single and EP releases and regular touring, including slots with The Sleepy Jackson, the band finally recorded their long-awaited debut album last year at Stagefright Studios with Michael Carpenter, before completing the production and mixing process with Jason De Wilde at Big Splash Studios. As lyrically eye-opening at times as it is melodically absorbing, the resulting 12 tracks that make up ‘…Tell Her On The Weekend’ have been well worth the wait.
