2.0 out of 5 stars Nice film ... shame about the sync., 27 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This is a lovely film.
Serena Scott Thomas plays a convincing Hebe who can harness
men in her train with her sweet nature and beauty.

However, 1 hour and 15 minutes into the film, the audio becomes out of sync with the picture. The transfer of the picture is somewhat grainy as well.

Such a disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lady Of Pleasure, 16 Nov 2008
A charming film adaptation of the novel "Harnessing Peacocks" by popular author Mary Wesley.

Filmed in Cornwall in 1992 this story centres on fiercely independent Hebe Rutter (Serena Scott Thomas) who enjoys a comfortable lifestyle paid for by gourmet cooking for wealthy ladies and providing sexual favours for her syndicate of affluent businessmen, "her peacocks". A lifestyle chosen by a determination to ensure that her adolescent son Silas is provided with every opportunity in life - something she was cruelly denied as a child by the untimely death of her parents and the subsequent miserable existence endured with her unaffectionate grandparents. Hebe steadfastly refuses to acknowledge Silas' father - a man barely remembered from a one night liasion 13 years previous. But fate changes her safe organised world forever. Silas' friend and local antiques dealer Bernard Quigley (Sir John Mills) invites professional colleague Jim Huxtable (Peter Davison) to stay at his home with a promise of profitable business opportunity. With a kind and gentle nature, Jim makes an immediate and favourable impression with the local residents. But meeting with Hebe he realizes that their paths have crossed once before.

"HARNESSING PEACOCKS" is a slow-paced yet riveting film. And blessed with a number of extraordinary characters, not least Mungo Duff (Nicholas Le Prevost) whose contempt for his wife and children is matched only by his lust for Hebe. And odious stockbroker Julian Reeves (Jeremy Child) who belittles Silas about his family circumstances - an action which provokes the boy into a sudden and unexpected outburst. Tom Beasley warrants a special mention for his portrayal of young Silas.

Enhanced by a quality of acting this film remains one of the most popular of its genre. Note that some scenes are unsuitable for children, hence the film's classification of 15.

4.0 out of 5 stars A jolly film, 12 Dec 2009
By William (England) - See all my reviews
An enjoyable film - much better than the lower-scoring reviews suggest. Scenery (Wiltshire, Cornwall, Scilly) attractive. The carnival scenes were good. The 'other' Scott-Thomas is a pleasure to watch.
