At the height of the British Raj in the late nineteenth century, Franklin Prestage, Agent of the East Bengal Railway, proposed what many thought was impossible - a track running from the humid plains of Siliguri to the alpine heights of Darjeeling. Over a hundred years later the famous 'Toy Train' is still running up the Himalayas to the same destination, following the same ingenious loops and zigzags. Though threatened with closure on numerous occasions the line has now been granted 'World Heritage' status, thus guaranteeing it a secure future. DVD extra features: Interview with Sherab Tendul, 5 unreleased clips of the train in action, 3 slide shows and historical scene selection menu

I have never seen such a magnificent piece of filming of such spectacular landscape explored in such detail by the liitle steam trains of india, combined with the timeless tranquility of a period almost forgotten, you actually feel as though you could smell the smells and touch the images for yourself.
For any of us train fanatics here is a director who has got the vision for such an outstanding documentary film.
To view this film sat in your armchair is an absolute delight.Every second holds your interest seeing the train travel up the mountains through the villages sampling many of the diferent kinds of people and spectacular terain and to reach what seems to be the top of the world and view the sunrise from above the clouds looking across to one of the higest peeks in the Himalayas.
A must see film. 10 out of 10.

Spectacular photography combines with an insight into the lives of those who work on the railway. Steam enthusiasts and lovers of India and its variety will be fascinated by this.

I really enjoyed this DVD, which adds to my library of Indian Railways. There is so much colour and enjoyment from these DVDs and it makes one wonder how such rail systems have survived without the modern workshops which once existed in the West. These little railways are a credit to the men and women who keep the systems running. The colour of the surrounding countryside and the little villages are, for my wife and I, fantastic viewing. Not just an interest to rail fans but prospective travellers can possibly plan a holiday to such regions and I'm sure they would not be disappointed. To late for me now, but I would love to experience these railways first hand, maybe in another life.

There is very little information available for the Shimla railway line, that is why I purchased this DVD. It covers the 3 Main Indian Hill Railways. The video is a nice balance of the railways themselves, the local communities they serve and those that rely on the railway for their likelihoods. This video is not just for the enthusiast, it covers far more than just the railway. It is a snapshot of Indian life.

Went to Darjeeling last month and this brings back so many pleasant memories. Well constructed and stunningly photographed, this DVD cannot fail to impress. The railway is currently under repair and therefore non operational at the lower end (and has been for the last four years following a major landslide) but this film shows what it looks like over the entire length of the track.
