The Avengers made it into the third millennium, 29 Sep 2001
By A Customer
In spite of some minor flaws in picture and sound quality these disc are worth every penny. The mono soundtrack sounds a bit dull to those who are used to multi channel encoded discs in the Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS format, but all in all sound quality is really good considering this series were made more than three decennia ago. The picture quality is absolutely fabulous for a series from 1967. I've never seen The Avengers in such bright colours. When I first saw them on television they looked much more faded and less colourful. The episodes themselves are all very enjoyable to watch. Being a great fan of the series I have to say that I'm very fond of the first colour episode "From Venus With Love". The reason for that is quite simple: It was the first episode I ever saw. The Fear Merchants, The See-Through Man and The Bird Who Knew Too Much are not really my favourite episodes but feature some very nice characters such as Jordan, the man who runs a school for birds. Escape In Time and The Winged Avenger make this set complete. Some of the extras this DVD set has to offer are a little disappointing. The "Follow That Hat" Feature hardly provides you with a look behind the scenes. But there's a wonderful picture gallery and the short promo "The Strange Case of the Missing Corps". For those who want a better look into the creative process behind The Avengers I would recommend the documentary "Avenging Avengers". Finally what is most important: This is more than 300 minutes of Avengers. And honestly, who can resist those beautiful eyes of Emma Peel? Who cannot like the debonair gentleman John Steed? Exactly my point! All Avengers Fans will love this box set, which contains the first six episodes of the first colour season of The Avengers. I could not be happier that this series has made it into third millennium on the fabulous DVD format. I hope the other Emma Peel episodes, including the black and white ones, will follow soon. Edwin Meijster a fan from The Netherlands.

A Thing of Pure Joy, 6 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I've waited for what seems an eternity for the Avengers to be released on DVD, and now here it is at last. The first six episodes of the colour Rigg season are here presented on two discs, digitally remastered and complete. Although by this stage the series had become rather formulaic with the same rigid plot structure employed every week, the verve and imagination shown as the programme embraces elements of science fiction and comic-strip are breathtaking. I am always amazed that people criticise Patrick Macnee's acting ability - his performance as Steed is wonderful, his comic ability clearly evident. Diana Rigg is of course absolutely gorgeous. Look out for also for superb guest star cameos from Jon Pertwee, Peter Bowles and Warren Mitchell, among others. The fully restored and remastered picture really enhances the viewing of these episodes. Extras are limited, but include the wonderful 'Strange Case of the Missing Corpse', the promo short made to showcase the programme in America, recently rediscovered in 1999. There is also an extensive picture gallery, a jazzy trailer for the series, and a 'Follow the Hat' feature which can be accessed whilst watching the episodes or straight from the main menu, but which is quite disappointingly done, with poor graphics intruding upon the interviews with chosen subjects (e.g Macnee and Cyd Child). For many people this is the Avengers at the height of its powers - I really cannot recommend these episodes highly enough - hopefully the rest of the series will follow soon.

The REAL Avengers on DVD - At last, 7 Jun 2001
By A Customer
For Avengers afficionados - It is now time to burn your copy of the dreadful 1998 movie and to appreciate the delights of the ORIGINAL series. Taken from the first colour episodes, this is British TV at its best - offbeat, tongue-in-cheek and gloriously naff scriptwriting!Steed is an Icon for the gentlemen british secret agent - a complete gentleman with the ladies (unlike Bond) but totally at home with an awful lot of beauties! (like Bond). The classic Bentley, Bowler, Brolly and of course the wonderful Emma Peel (I'm still in love with Diana Rigg). If you haven't had the Avengers experience - here is where to start. And you get 2 DVDs in the set - bargain!
