Synopsis

Irish rocker Rory Gallagher is a talented singer-songwriter whose guitar powered rock is laced with a boogie woogie, blues sensibility. Sporadically popular through the 1970's and 1980's, Gallagher is filmed here in 1974, playing throughout his homeland of Ireland. 9 tracks including "Cradle Rock," "Bullfrog Blues," and "Walk on Hot Coals" are performed.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm cut up about this cut to pieces film, 11 Feb 2006
By A 70's Old Fart "gogsie7354" (Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews
I and many rock/blues fans saw this film when it was first shown in cinemas and was extatic when found it was to be finally released on DVD. What a let down, it's been cut to bits with songs omitted i.e. I WONDER WHO, TOO MUCH ALCOHOL & BACK ON MY STOMPIN' GROUND. The order of play has been changed, and tracks not in the original film added. The editor Stephen Saunders shoudn't be let within 100 miles of another film if this is an example of his work. An excellent film has been ruined.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amazing gig......Terrible editing!, 25 Nov 2003
By Mr. K. Sinclair (leeds, w yorks United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What a dilemma! This DVD contains footage from some immensely brilliant playing by Rory, however the editing is an absolute TRAVESTY. The person who edited the concert footage is quite clearly oblivious to the reason why people liked Rory. The guitar is NEVER in shot during ANY of the exquisite, intense, immaculate, blinding soloing! Seriously, NOT ONCE!
This is the most ridiculous and irritating waste of time as far as I'm concerned. Surely I'm not the only one whos noticed this?

Why wasnt it re-edited from the original footage??

Some of the footage is priceless though. Rory demonstrates different styles of playing in an interview for example...and YES the guitar IS in shot for once. The doc demonstrates what a down to earth man Rory was, but as a visual demonstration of his unique style this dissapoints severly. Why is there no option to watch the whole gig for example.

C'mon this should have been a LOT better.

The Video at the Cork Opera House is therefore far superior, (even though I dont tend to like anything recorded in the 80s) and is recommended instead of this.

An absolute waste of what should have been the ultimate footage of an incredible talent. 5 stars if it had been reedited and the whole gig was here as it is ...2 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy it! Great music - shoddy cutting...., 2 Mar 2001
Great music and a 'must have' for Rory fans, and blues fans in general. It's great to see this legendary blues man again. However, I've got to say that the shoody cutting and poor sound detract somewhat from the pleasure. All too often during the performance of a particular song we cut from Rory playing Strat' in red shirt, to Rory playing Tele' in black shirt, and back again. He was fast - but not that fast! Buy it
