Francisco Canaro was not only one of tango's founding fathers but also its godfather. He was credited with writing thousands of dances and songs and even if he only wrote 1500 of those he is still an outstanding artist. This CD contains dances from his early golden period but, for obvious reasons it is not "representative". Nonetheless, there is a good selection of his different styles, including a hard edged arrangement of La Cumparsita and his plush and snappy Recuerdos de Paris. Some of them were recorded on elementary equipment and reprocessing can't hide that. In this period dance was also a different activity and often took place in vast halls where the main purpose of the band was to define the beat. So this has a 'primitive' tone that is not everyone's cup of tea. But this was my first collection of Pirincho's music and I was soon hooked!
