Basically a covers album. Some good tracks, some not so good. If you're a BC fan then you'll probably like it, if not get The Crossing, Buffalo Skinners or Driving to Damascus first.

Big Country, although hot property in the mid-80s, have only recently received news coverage again. Much of their output in the intervening years was fairly average, never recapturing the passion of their early work. However, this is an interesting live performance from the mid-90s, recorded at Dingwall's in London.
This album brings together some old Big Country classics and some well chosen covers, such as "I'm of Fire" by Bruce Springstein, and "Eleanor Rigby". Not usually being a fan of covers, I was surpised at how the band had managed to bring something new to these classic songs. At the same time, their own songs sound very good in a live environment. In my opinion, "Come Back To Me" and "Winter Sky" both sound better here than in their original guise on "Steeltown", Big Country's second album.

However, after all is said and done, this is just a live album, and therefore only essential for die hard fans. I have yet to hear a live recording that captures the atmosphere of a concert or possesses the subtleties of a studio album. This is one of the better live albums I've heard, but I still don't find myself listening to it particularly frequently.

Well, At Least They Didn't Call It "Unplugged" 23 Aug. 1998

"Eclectic" is a live acoustic set recorded @ Dingwalls in London 03/20-21/96. Stuart & the boys do the "unplugged" thing on BC standards such as "River Of Hope", "King Of Emotion", etc. The "eclectic" fun of the album, however, are the cover tunes, with help from several guests. Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" (replete with a female vocalist who properly hits all the high notes), Gershwin's "Summertime", The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and The Stones "Ruby Tuesday". The best two covers are Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" and a frentic reading of The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby". Note: Some of these tracks also appear on the "Kings Of Emotion" 2CD set, but don't let that stop you; if you are a BC fan, this is a must.
