Product Description

Product Description

1995 anthology, originally released to coincide with the release of the four disc box set Thrill Of It All. Roxy Music began life as a British Art Rock band in the early 70s but by the time they split a decade later, they had matured into a smooth Rock outfit capable of creating some of the most lush, romantic and beautiful music on the Pop charts. Lead vocalist Bryan Ferry carried on the Roxy tradition on his solo albums recorded during and after the bands original 10 year career. This compilation includes the Ferry songs Is Your Love Strong Enough (from the movie Legend) and Your Painted Smile from the album Mamouna, both of which were not included on the U.S. equivalent. 20 tracks total.

"Virginia Plain", "Street Life", "Love Is The Drug", "Avalon"--they are all here on this splendid, all-encompassing greatest hits package. As on the other Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music hits compilation, Street Life, the early years of Brian Eno period Roxy Music are largely overlooked in favour of Ferry's later, less avant-garde fare, from the extraordinarily camp "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" to the chirpy "Let's Stick Together". Throughout, it's hard to resist the potent combination of Ferry's vampiric croon and Roxy Music's art school chic. A sexy and exciting ride through some of the finest pop moments of the 1970s and 80s. --Amber Cowan

Some years back by accident I was introduced to this Great Band - "Roxy Music". Its True, they have their own style of music unique to them! Immediately I loved their style of music and bought this and many of its albums. This album features a collection of the BEST tracks from Roxy music and of Bryan Ferry. MY favourtie is More than this! Roxy music dates back to about 20 years, one aspect i like about their music is the introduction of the sax in some songs and the organ,it goes realy well with Bryans vocals. Brillianty compiled into one of the best albums of Roxy Music! Even if you like other types of music, listen to this will open you to another level of music. A must have and must listen.

I bought this as my first Roxy Music CD in 1995 and which I think is a sort of anthology of Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry including many of their singles. I have always viewed Roxy Music as an innovative band and have been drawn to their music ever since I heard 'dance away' for me is a sort of funky-pop type track that came popular around the same time as songs like `Night Fever' in the late 70s era. However, top five favourite tracks from this Album are: "More than this", "Same old scene", "Avalon", "Jealous guy", & "Oh yeah". There other tracks, I could add as additional favourites as well. Overall, this compilation has very good variety of Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music track(s) like "Street Life" which is more rock than pop and the fast pop early hit "Virginia Plain". Obviously, the classic platters track "Smoke gets in your eyes" is a timeless track. For hard-core fans, this may not be the very best Album but it is good start to find out what Bryan Ferry & his Roxy Music band are about after scratching the surface of their image of being "suave & sophisticated' artist and his band.

Bryan Ferry, either solo or as lead singer with Roxy music, made the top ten of the British charts in the seventies and eighties with fifteen singles and an extended play EP. He also had several other hits so they couldn't all be included here.
Bryan wrote a lot of his own material but he also recorded some distinctive covers. Two of the songs here date back to the thirties. Of course, most people remember the Platters for Smoke gets in your eyes, but it was actually written in 1934. The other oldie, These foolish things, was originally an American number one hit for Benny Goodman in 1936. Bryan eventually emphasized his love for such songs by recording a whole album of them later in his career. Other distinctive covers include Jealous Guy (John Lennon), which provided Bryan with his only UK number one hit, and A hard rain's a gonna fall (Bob Dylan).
Most of the essentials are here including all the songs already mentioned plus Let's stick together, Virginia plain, Love is the drug, Dance away, Angel eyes, Oh yeah and More than this - are here. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that apart from some of the minor hits, Over you (a top five UK hit) and the UK top ten hits Price of love, This is tomorrow and Pyjamarama are also missing.
A single CD cannot do full justice to Bryan's music but this is a strong collection.

This really is the candle light and tuxedo collection.

Though comparisons are subjective, this is one of a few compilations of combined Roxy/Ferry solo works.

Apart from the first two or three songs, this selection concentrates on the more MOR, easy listening numbers and wouldn't qualify as a definitive `best of' for most Roxy Music fans.

A shame most of the world remembers Roxy for Avalon or Love Is The Drug. When this CD excludes such classics as Pyjamarama, All I Want Is You, Trash, The In Crowd... in fact, you could make a great playlist from the great tracks missing from this album.

I'm guessing this is the record company showing just one side of the man and the band. Some may prefer the other, more edgy style.

And there are others available with more than this collection.
Excuse the pun. Or if you're like me - compile your own so you're not tempted to skip the ones that get enough airplay anyway.

I'll stick with five stars as this still beats so much of the current music available from new, younger artists.

Roxy Music was very innovative for their time and their sound progressed with every album. In particular, they used the synthesizer in a new way to create compelling textures in their fresh take on art rock. Much variety is displayed here in great rockers like Street Life and the frenzied pop of their first major hit Virginia Plain. There is also the majestic buzz of Love Is The Drug and the slick croon of Dance Away and More Than This, another take on plastic soul? Avalon impresses with its mature lyricism while their interpretation of the classic Smoke Gets In Your Eyes has stood the test of time very well. But my favourite is Ferry's bizarre version of Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, a truly amazing tour de force of hypnotic beats and weird vocals giving the song a complete make-over. This is a truly outstanding collection of songs and though it may not please all the hardcore fans, it provides the cream of Roxy and Ferry's hit singles, making it the perfect anthology for exploring the man and the band.
