Product Description

Product Description

The book to challenge climate change sceptics “What’s the point in me doing anything about climate change when China is opening two new power stations a week?” All of us are guilty of making excuses not to change our lifestyles especially when it comes to global warming and climate change. What about China? aims to show that all the excuses we give to avoid reducing our carbon footprint and our personal impact on the environment are exactly that, excuses. The book illustrates through clear explanation, facts and figures, that any changes we make now will have an effect, both directly and indirectly on climate change. Various topics covered include climate; recycling; energy; travel and food. Clear, concise and entertaining answers are given to 70 questions by a panel of experts from The Soil Association, Waste Watch and the Centre for Alternative Technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, Read it, send it to your MP, 25 Aug 2008

(REAL NAME)
Don't be fooled by the title. I thought this was going to be a rant about how China is killing the planet whilst we in the West are doing our part to save it! How wrong was I!! Covering pretty much all areas of environmental concern this very easy to ready book is really a must have for anyone concerned about this planet that we call home. I said that it was easy to read but for those of us with an environmental conscience it doesn't always make comfortable reading. It is a book that inspires you to action alongside giving you clear and well researched facts. It is written in bite-sized chunks using a question and answer format making it easy to dip back into.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Buy it, read it, send it to your MP go out and buy more copies and send them to family, friends and anyone who will take this excellent material seriously. I'd love to see a book like this on the national curriculum and in every household.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought, 6 Oct 2008
This is one of those relatively rare books - one that provides plenty of food for thought for a committed environmentalist and sustainability consultant to boot. And the book takes you through plenty of serious arguments in an engaging way. As with any book, there were some highlights - the early revelation of capturing carbon through burying charcoal was a real inspiration, and the section on slow travel was a delight to read. The demolition job on 'traditional' tourism was comprehensive, and the call to arms over ethical banking struck a good tone - why don't people tend to discuss money matters, even with close friends? There were one or two downsides - more careful editing should have eliminated the faintly ridiculous suggestion that a vegetarian diet isn't likely to be more sustainable than a meat eater's (p.57), particularly when excessive meat eating is later described (p.84) as "one of the gravest threats to the long-term sustainability of mankind". But this was an enjoyable, informative read, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to even the most grizzled of environmental campaigners.

4.0 out of 5 stars What to do now ?, 14 Aug 2008
Like everyone else I've heard about climate change and like most I think I do 'my fair share' to ease the situation, but having read this book I realise just how little I am actually doing. Now, armed with much more information I can really start to make a difference personally and try and encourage my friends and family to do the same. Trying to persuade Dad to sell his gas guzzler might be a bit of a problem, but it's certainly got to be worth a try !!
