5.0 out of 5 stars Masterly ! Why Have I Not Seen It Before ?, 29 Jan 2006
By Capt I. McRae "The Ancient Mariner" (Angus, Scotland.) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Everyone knows Neil Munro wrote “The Para Handy Tales”, but his other works are less known. Why is this book not as well known as I believe it should be ? I’m baffled ! Not only is this a great yarn, but it verges on being great literature. The characters come alive from the page, and I found that they developed distinct personalities as I got to know them. It is not a “can’t put down” type of book. It encourages taking one’s time and enjoying the descriptive talents of the author. His use of the Scottish vernacular is wonderful, and while there may be wee bitties that a Sassenach micht nae jalouse richt awa, the context will elucidate quite easily. Having read Para Handy with great pleasure, I was unaware of Munro’s more dramatic work. Here it is, and well worth the finding.
