It's not as bad as I thought it was gonna be.

There are some "regular" versions; both HS, Maybe I'm a Leo, never before and Lazy, all in a rather "classic" rock/blues/heavy format; and then the surprises... Good and very bad...

Chickenfoot's version of Highway Star is a good rockin Live rendition of the song, although it is a bit chaotic, while the Hughes/Vai version is very powerful, swingin and cleaner and benefits of a great intro. Both versions are good.

Maybe I'ma Leo has a good funky groove added to it, thanks to (again) Hughes and Chad Smith. Very good version.

BLS version of Pictures of Home is somehow in a balladesque mood, which surprised me at first, but I like the fact that they gave it another go. It's rather well done.

Never Before is nicely performed by top musicians Joe Elliot, Matt Sorum, steve Stevens and Duff McKagan. Well done.

Both SotW are awful, especially Santana's, I cannot stand his addition to the opening riff, I immediatly have to press "next" before the intro is over.

I think Flaming Lips 's version is good in its own world of experimentation (think Residents or Kraftwerk) but has nothing to do on this-rather rock- tribute album.

Lazy is a battlefield for guitars and organ. Bonamassa shines. Extremely well executed solos and vocals (Jimmy Barnes), but the rhythm section is just not swingin' at all...It just doesn't groove the way it should.

Maiden's Space truckin is just awful. You can just feel that they couldn't care less and recorded in between two mojito's. The sound is just awful too, especially the sound of the drums-sounds like it's been taken with just the over-heads.

I can imagine not every DP fan will be happy with the album when he compares the tribute versions with the original songs. For me it's a great tribute album, I wish some songs would have been even more different to the originals (which you can't beat by trying to copy them).

01 Smoke On The Water - Santana & Jacoby Shaddix: Not bad but for my taste Santana should have tried to let his Latin sound shine through a bit more. For me it's not different enough to the original which is a pity. It's okay to listen to it but it's neither fish nor fowl somehow.

02 Highway Star - Chickenfoot: Good version but as soon as you hear the bonus version with Glenn Hughes you forget about this one.

03 Maybe I'm A Leo - Glenn Hughes & Chad Smith: Magic! I really love this version! Glenn, Chad and Luis put so much heavy funk into this rock song that it was my favorite straight away. Really impressive!

04 Pictures Of Home - Black Label Society: Love this version as well! Heavy rock with very great vocals, well arranged. I didn't know that band before but I think they did a fantastic version here.

05 Never Before - Kings Of Chaos: Classic Rock at its best, very groovy with a great guest musician Arlan Schierbaum on B3 organ/Wurlitzer which is a nice tribute especially to Jon Lord. Couldn't sit still to this one...

06 Smoke On The Water - The Flaming Lips: Haha...first thought: holy cr*p! Then I listened to it again and I have to admit that I think it's quite brave to do such a version of this holy song. I mean they must have known they get crucified for what they did here by all the heavy DP fans? To me it sounds like a mixture of Paul Hardcastle's "19" (slowed down) and the German electronic band Kraftwerk.

Bought this because of Steve Vai doing Highway Star docu/clip on youtube, bigging up Purple and his cover version. Yet on purchase I find he's not even on the album, WTF!
Its an ok album, but not what I expected.
Recommend it to people who haven't heard the original, which is still better.

There are some moderate covers but the best is to buy the fanpack as you get a magazine with all the background history of the making of the album, some rare photos and most importantly you get the bonus of 'Highway Star' with Steve Vai, Glenn Hughes and Chad Smith. It is a cracking interpretation of the track as Vai's guitar works off the 'Made In Japan' version of the track which was always superior in any case.

some excellent new versions of classic songs, for example two totally different takes on "smoke on the water", both great for different reasons, ideal for deep purple fans or just rock fans in general

With names such as: Santana, Bonamassa, Iron Maiden and Metallica. - I couldn't wait to hear the album. And they did not diasppoint. Deep Purple and their loyal followers should be well pleased.
However, the pathetic attempt at 'Smoke On The Water' by The Flamimg Lips completely ruined a classic track and the cd as a whole - disgraceful!!! They should be ashamed of themselves. What were the producers thinking? Everyone accepts it should not be an exact copy of the original. But, they totally trashed one of the all time great rock tracks!!!

Great tribute CD, great artists. I would recommend to any Deep Purple fan, as the songs have been brilliantly remastered.
