Having read a few books on composting, it comes as a breath of fresh air to find one that is so easy to read and clear about the information presented. If you are a beginner to composting, you can be sure that reading this book just once, will leave you in no doubt about what to to, how to start and plenty of confidence in getting a good result. Rachelle's book is written in a friendly uncomplicated manner that gets right to the heart of the methods, and pitfalls of composting, including a great check-list of problems and remedies. The book starts with a concise and easy to understand description of what composting is, how it happens and the type of materials that can be used. At one time a compost heap was just that... a heap, but now, there are many alternative methods and devices to assist the process. This book covers details on all the various types of composting methods, including the various hardware options available now.

I was also surprised to see that new methods have come on the market where it is possible to successfully compost cooked food, both in small kitchen composters or wormeries and also outside methods such as the Green Cone and Johanna. Even if you do not have a garden, it is possible to compost kitchen waste in a small bokashi bin that's smaller than a bucket and gain a very useful feed for your house plants. The author frequently refers to the environmental benefits of composting, not only for the gardener, but as a means to reduce waste to landfill and contribute to an environmentally friendly lifestyle. This is a very topical subject in today's eco-climate and it becomes very clear that composting is a vital part of the zero waste strategy that we should all consider.

Rachelle Strauss writes in a very prosaic and down to earth style that immediately puts you at ease without the fear that this is going to get complicated and technical. She repeats the vital principles many times throughout the book, not by fault, but as a subtle way of ensuring you learn the basics through familiarity without having to make notes or bookmark important gems of information. A single read will leave you feeling 'This actually sounds easy to do" and that's the whole point. Making composting accessible and easy for even the novice, without too many technicalities getting in the way. To that end "Compost: How to Make - How to Use - Everyday Tips Green Living Compost" wins hands down as a must have introduction to the subject and a great motivational book for the aspiring gardener.

Very interesting, i read loads of books on how to start a compost bin and none explained the sticks etc at the bottom, no wonder i never got a really good one going.

also the bokashi bins i never read that you then put them on the compost bin, i thought that was it that all my waste would be turned to gold within 4 weeks,

AND people are always telling me that wasps have no use to us whatsoever, i always said they wouldnt be here if they didnt have a purpose.

everything is explained simply and step by step so even i got confidence to try a new way of recycling my kitchen waste.

and the snails in my garden will now be finding a new home in my compost bin saving me from having to sacrifice a few plants

I Love this book! I've read a few books on composting and some have been too intense and confusing. Others have been too simplified. This book sits right in the middle.
What I love most about this book is that it is 'holistic' in the way the author deals with the subject. Yes, it's about compost, but she brings other things into the text such as five of the most hardy house plants for people that aren't experienced growers. She encourages us to rethink our household waste and talks about composting for people without gardens by talking about some different composting system - two of which I had never heard of.

I like the presentation - it's broken down into small chunks so that I can dip in and out of it. It has some useful tables and check lists for quick reference and you don't feel as if you are wading through a complicated text. it's more like having a chat with someone who is experienced and passionate about what she is talking about than reading heavy text.

I like the friendly style too - I don't feel like I am being talked at; I genuinely feel that the author cares about the subject, about the environment and wants to help the reader to take that next step towards green living. I would love to read more books by her as her style of writing is so accessible, yet knowledgeable. It's full of useful hints and tips which can make all the difference.
