Product Description

Product Description

A cookbook that reflects the colourful, flamboyant nature of its author. It features 80 recipes mostly from North and Central India and includes such dishes as Prawn Moilee (prawns cooked with coconut milk), Chilgoza Rice (rice cooked with caramelized onions and pinenuts), Spiced Mussels in a Tamarind Broth and Cashews in a Rich Coconut Sauce This exquisite fare is accompanied by lively, amusing text in Reza's inimitable voice - full of charm and wit and chutzpah! Beautiful landscape photographs redolent of the mystery and romance of the East are interspersed throughout and complement the mouthwatering images of Reza's food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Delicious, 8 Dec 2006
By Julia (Homeless at present!) - See all my reviews
The book is beautifully presented - I received it as a present and am thrilled. The quality of the book is great - I love the cover and not just on the paper cover they have also gone to the trouble to emboss the actual hardcover. The writing style is slightly tongue in cheek and very amusing. It is not too heavy and the recipies are delicious and very easy to follow. So often cook books use terminology that is not often known to a lay person. This book is both a visual and edible feast and I am only a fraction of the way through trying out the recipies - please can we have more - perhaps in the next book Reza can do a recipie for his famous chocolate samaosa! I will be buying this as presents for deserving friends over the coming months!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with a good selection for Vegetarians!, 18 Mar 2007
By Mr. Patrick A. Harrington "doublethink" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

I loved Reza in the surprise hit TV show and book 'A Place in France' (ISBN 978-0330431392) which tells the tale of the opening of an Indian restaurant in rural France. He came across as a larger than life character that attacked and overcame all obstacles. He was always full of enthusiasm and a dash of mischief.

This book is more about the food. He explains in the Introduction: -

"While my cousins were climbing trees and playing cricket, I disappeared to the kitchen, spellbound by the exotic aromas, captivated by the chopping of herbs, grinding of spices on stone, extracting of coconut milk for rice dishes, the cauldrons in the burning embers and the pickles, jams and preserves. It was a different world, and one that I found endlessly fascinating."

This fascination is clearly expressed through the recipes. Being a Vegetarian I was particularly interested in those which could be adapted or were suitable for us. Often there are only a few in some books but here there was a good choice. I cooked and particularly enjoyed the French bean and cashew nut thoran (Kaju Poshu Thoran). The sweet pancakes (made with almonds and pistachios) were a delicious dessert.

Reza writes in a jokey, informal style. This book is fun to read and simple to follow. There are great pictures from Robin Seymour of The Refinery (Films). I'd be tempted to say that the design and pictures are so beautiful that it is an ideal coffee table book, but it would be a shame to leave it there. This is a book that deserves to be in the kitchen!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you know Reza from the TV and like him you will love his book!, 14 Nov 2006

Many of you may be familiar with his work on numerous tv programmes with Nigel and Delhi Belly with Sanjeev Baskar.

This recipe book is excellent - beautifully presented with some good photographs and well written: with the same inimitable style as comes across on TV (!)and has many of the recipes he has shown on TV as well as many more.

I have already tried the Mussels in Tamarind Broth - truley excellent and am familiar with some of the other ones - e.g. Monkfish wrapped in Banana leaves. He manages to cover some Indian classics but also shows his inventiveness with some truely interesting fusion dishes.

Definitely recommended!
