Product Description

Product Description
In the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East some of World War II's greatest legends were born as Erwin Rommel the "Desert Fox" led his Afrika Korps against the "Desert Rats" of the British 8th Army led by Bernard Montgomery. Both sides recruited local people to their cause, winning stunning victories but planting the seeds of conflicts to come. This exceptional work draws on exclusive interviews with Rommel's German-Italian translator, covers the Mediterranean grand strategy of both sides, evaluates the impact of the campaign on today's North Africa and Middle East, and gives a complete description of operations in Syria and Iraq. The dramatic text, which includes the first English language coverage of the Italian-Australian atrocity controversy, is backed up by rare photos taken by veterans of the action, new maps, and complete orders of battle for both Axis and Allies, including the most accurate listing of Italian units yet available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb information from a unique perspective, 25 Jan 2003
By buddingpasha "A multilateralist" (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book despite its title discusses the AXIS forces in North Africa and more interestingly the significantly underrated Italian contribution. It has a very readable prose style and concentrates on little known side actions that were infantry based. Interstingly it debunks a lot of the myths regarding the so-called clean nature of the campaign but there are also rare bits of humorous anecdote. I particularly liked Rommels objection to the white South Africans' request to be seperated from their black fellow soldiers.
Personally most people will when thinking of this campaign buy or seek out the British Official histories, Moorhead's African Trilogy, the rather Teutonic biased German biographies (where the Italians at best are ignored) or even Corelli Barnet's The Desert Generals. I suggest get one of these more popular ones but under any circumstances get this one as well.
