More About the Author

I studied Art and Design at Loughborough College of Art and Design. Among other things, I now use my creativity to write cookbooks. I have been married to Ron for over 30 years and we have two sons, Ben and Tim, who have left home and are starting families.

When my sister and I were quite young, probably 5 and 6 years old, we started to cook, mainly cakes, biscuits and simple meals. By the time I was 12, we would cook Sunday lunch. I love this heritage and am passionate about good food. There is nothing I love more than having a house full of people to feed.

I started out by writing out first student cookbook back in 2001. Since then we have written new editions including vegetarian versions, graduate versions and a family cookbook. We have just finished two new books called Nosh Quick & Easy and Nosh Gluten-Free. Both these books have been inspired by comments we get from people that use our books and so we are really excited to see how they work for people in the real world.

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease two months ago and have found the whole thing quite depressing and frustrating. After going through what I can only describe as "wheat withdrawal" for the first seven days I've really struggled mentally with going gluten free, eating the same three or four meals over and over again.

There is a section at the beginning of the book with a 'traffic light' list of foods, which shows which foods are naturally gluten free, which foods you can buy GF varieties of and which foods you need to completely avoid. There are tips on how to cook GF pasta, a list of ingredients handy to have in the pantry, and a guide showing which of the main supermarkets stock gluten free products.

The recipes are inspiring yet simple, well laid out and easy to follow, with a full page picture on the opposite page. The list of ingredients is split into sections (e.g. 'sauce' and 'topping') and there is also a little bar at the top which shows the prep and cooking times, difficulty level and price per portion.

No one who is gluten free should be without this cookbook. It is jam packed with simple and tasty recipes. It will inspire you to get cooking and baking and just goes to show that being gluten free does not mean you have to eat second rate versions of foods you used to love. There is a great selection of meals, desserts, and even the holy grail that is bread! The photos alone make your mouth water. This is definitely not a cookbook that ends up being forgotten, hidden away in a cupboard, but one that will come in handy time and time again. I love it!

I first came across Joy May's cookery books when I was looking for a good, simple cookbook for my teenage son. Although 'Nosh For Students' was aimed at undergraduates who were cooking for themselves for the first time, I found it invaluable and soon bought a copy for myself along with the companion volume, 'Vegetarian Nosh For Students'. I think I have cooked practically every recipe in these books: many are family favourites.

My husband has decided to try a gluten free diet, so this new book is a timely one. I'm very glad to see that it follows the format of earlier books very closely - there was no need for change, as the layout is an absolute winner. Each recipe has a clear, simple list of ingredients and instructions and a little guide at the top of the page to give you an idea of cost, difficulty, preparation and the number of people the dish will feed. The facing page has the all-important photo of the finished dish. The book's introduction is packed with information about what to eat and what to avoid, where to buy ingredients, and what to keep in your store cupboard. Like most really clever things, the book is deceptively simple, but I can tell that a great deal of hard work and research has gone into making it that way.

None of this would be any use if the recipes themselves weren't any good - but I'm happy to report that they are delicious! Tonight I made 'Prawn Gruyere Gratin' and everyone loved it. A few evenings ago we had 'Puy Lentils & Roast Vegetables with Lemon Chicken - again, clean plates all round. There was no sense of being on a some sort of hair-shirt diet or a punishment for being ill and no one noticed the change to gluten-free ingredients. I can't wait to try out some of the cakes and bread.

I bought this for my sister as her husband now has to have a gluten free diet. Theirs is a busy working family and this book just seemed to fit the bill. They are thrilled with "Nosh Gluten Free"! They find the recipes delicious, with no feeling of "loss" for having to go gluten-free. My sister finds that the meals are not complex to make and don't take long to prepare either. She found the list of things to have in the cupboard most helpful. I am so pleased I was inspired to buy this book. It has transformed my sister's life, given her the confidence to cook GF meals, and made the transition stress-free and simple. Thank you May Family.

I am not familiar with gluten free recipes so i was very interested to see what there was to make that was gluten free. All the meals look so tasty and i didn't realize there was such a wide range of recipes you could do that were gluten free. I am very pleased to know that i do not have to limit my cooking to predictable recipes when we have friends round who prefer gluten free food. Thank you Joy, you're a star!

Another lovely book from the Nosh team!! This is the book I've been waiting for, one of the things I love about it is the gorgeous pictures accompanying each recipe so you at least get an idea of what yours should look like.

I have found that since going g/f, bread substitutes have been a complete let down - I now have two recipes from this book which have got me wanting and enjoying bread again. The chicken curry recipes I have found taste better than my local curry house, so I've been saving myself a fortune there too.

Also check out the new Nosh Quick and Easy recipes - at the top of most pages they have adaptations to the recipes to make them gluten-free.
