Product Description

In today's world we want everything in a quick and compact form, and today's reader is no different. "Seven Days" consists of easily accessible yet powerful snapshots of life from seven very different angles. Seven intriguing authors each delve into the consciousness of a character depicted on a single day. Named after the day described, each story offers an insight from an individual cultural perspective and together they weave a powerful and gritty portrait of human experience. A unique cross between the novel and the short story, this collection is designed for the busy modern-day reader and is an illustration of the unexpected wealth that the repackaged short story can offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 24 Dec 2007
By SJSmith (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I find short stories a bit hit and miss so this was a refreshing change. The stories, as you'll read in the introduction, are slightly longer than your traditional short story. What they do all have in common is that it is one day in the life of one character. So you get seven different characters whose day you have experienced. The characters are typical of their type (in my opinion) and introduce you to a range of cultures and attitudes.

Only two of them disappointed me, I think it was Thursday and Tuesday, other than that it is an enjoyable read. The writing is excellent and as each day is written by different authors your enjoyment is refreshed continually. Having not read `The Remarkable Everyday' which is what `Seven Days' follows up I couldn't say if this was an improvement or not and the introduction does say that there is a third one on its way.

Well worth a read, the beauty of these stories (being longer than traditional short stories) is that you can really get your teeth into them. Also you don't have to read them all at once, giving you time to reflect on one before starting another.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shorter fiction for the long view, 26 Mar 2007

The concept behind the collection is that the short story is, well, sold short. Legend Press editor Tom Chalmers argues that it is in fact the ideal vehicle for fiction in our fast-paced and unrelenting commuter world. This then is the result of his conviction, seven stories, each one a day-in-the-life snapshot from seven very distinct and culturally diverse characters, more challenging than the regular fare on the market, but still easily consumable in a lunchtime. Book-ended by the two standout contributions, simply entitled Friday (by Andrew Theophilou) and Sunday (by Josie Henley-Einion), the collection touches on a wealth of human experiences and has something to which every reader can relate.

If you like your short fiction real, gritty, and with more bite than a rabid jack russell, then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of fascinating quick stories..., 7 April 2007

I've never been into short stories until after reading '7 days' I was pleasantly suprised. It is a brilliant book containing cleverly contrasting stories with different outlooks on life that come together to compliment each other.
Each author has tackled their subject to give a fascinating insight to a range of human experiences. There is so much I could relate to or grabbed my attention with the shocking issues some stories challenged and excellent characters that you find yourself feeling their emotions. There is something for everyone in this book and I have recomended it to everyone I know!
The drug addict on the streets stood out as one of the strong pieces in the book, also The 95 year old lesbian in a nursing home which was the perfect way to end the collection.
This book suits people who live busy lives.
I want more now!
