4.0 out of 5 stars A chance for families to pass on memories, 12 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Don't Tread on the Butterflies: Memoirs of a Childhood in Heacham and Stiffkey 1912-1932 (Paperback)
Friends of mine sent me this book from England for Christmas, and I found it very evocative of the era when my parents were growing up. They both read it with great pleasure, but the bonus was that it led them to pass on some of their recollections of the same period, stories that I had never heard before.

Joan Sternberg writes with authenticity and from vivid memories, which have brought a lot of other memories to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, humorous memoir; author knew Rector of Stiffkey., 31 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Don't Tread on the Butterflies: Memoirs of a Childhood in Heacham and Stiffkey 1912-1932 (Paperback)
Now 88, the author spent childhood holidays on her grandfather's farm in Stiffkey where the family knew Harold Davidson the famous Rector. She lovingly evokes village life 1912-1932 but this is much more than a local memoir. It is beautifully written and each short chapter is a little gem, with pen and ink illustrations by artist Philippa Abrahams. A small but perfectly formed book by an author with vivid memories and a sense of poetry.
