Product Description

Product Description

There is no mystery surrounding the reasons for IT project failure but the key issue is that IT services vendors and buyers make the same mistakes again and again, and again. This manual offers systematic guidance on how to sense and avoid the causes of IT project failure at every step; from project conception to the disposal of the system after a long and beneficial operational life. It includes a detailed analysis of the 40 root causes of troubled IT projects - drawing on research and the author's experience and common sense. The text covers the entire project life cycle from both sides of the buyer-vendor relationship and should be useful handbook for software engineering and IT services professionals.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars an immensly useful book!, 28 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I have just finished reading my copy of this book and would thoroughly recommend it to all IT project managers.

Most projects of any substance that I have been involved with seem to fit the 'troubled IT projects' tag defined in the book, and the author presents a clear strategy for avoiding problems before and once they occur. I was particularly interested in the discussion of getting the initial proposal right before proceeding which is where, in my experience, problems often occur and we are then trying to catch up throughout the rest of the project.

I wouldn't say that the book necessarily taught me anything I didn't already know and to a large extent the material covered is really just common sense. However it is really useful and illuminating to see it all encapsulated in the one book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful and pragmatic!, 17 Dec 2002
By anna marino (southampton, hants United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I found this book very useful and it is always in my drawer for quick consultations. The author not only lists what he reckons are the main causes of troubled projects in different stages of the project itself, but he provides useful examples to show on a more practical level how to identify these causes in real IT projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars The description of most large projects I've worked on, 7 April 2006
This book is written by someone with plenty of experinence of projects with problems. I think anyone who has been on a project will be able to empathise with at least some (if not many) of the problems that are catalogued here.

What's useful is the book offers guidance as to how these problems can be minimised by proper planning and tracking, and responding to changes in a sensible manner. It doesn't try to mandate a particular way of working or running a project (practioners of agile methodologies may find that some of their ways are very compatible) but does present a realistic business case for how projects can be managed well, and be managed badly.

This is an excellent book, not only for your bookshelf, but also for dipping into regularly in order to anticpate problems rather than reacting to them.
