Okay, dont get me wrong, im a fan of Chris Rock. 'Down to Earth' rests among my dvd collection, and his parts in Dogma and Nurse Betty were great. BUT...this book is not as good as people seem to be making it out to be. Yes, in parts it can be funny..Laugh out loud funny in some parts. But if you have seen films such as Down to Earth and seen his live shows on Paramount or HBO, basically the funniest excerts from the book you will be familiar with. For example, after watching his pay-per-view and his section on 'Black people' and 'Niggas' I was crying with laughter. Sadly, when reading it basically word for word it doesnt emit as much emotion.
For the price it is worth it. Although i suggest you buy his CD's instead or look out for his shows on TV as these will provide you with much more humour.
Oh, and the running joke throughout the book about his part in Im Gonna Git You Sucka! is actually REALLY funny...but dont buy it for that.

That doesnt even begin to compare to Chris Rock's book. I had noticed that Chris Rock became hella famous this year and I always thought of him as hailrious on the reruns of SNL on Comedy Central. My best friend was on the phone w/ me and she started reading me from the book and I will swear to God i almost peed my pants!I had never heard anything that funny! ANd that was just the phone sex part. So I read it and OHMYLORD! Get this book and a new pair of underwear cuz I can almost guarentee you'll wet yourself silly!

In this era of "you're a comedian, so why not write a book," Chris Rock represents a departure in the best sense of the word. Leave it to others to make "nice" about wives, babies and other safe stuff, Chris has the conviction to talk about some issues that really matter. His take on the divisions between Black America cut to the heart of the issue in this country. He's not the 90's Eddie Murphy; he's better than that. I read his book then saw George Carlin in person within the week. If you appreciate the irreverance of Carlin (re; advertising, religion, yuppies, etc.) you'll find Rock speaks of similar truths.

'rock this,' wasn't a book, it was a word for word transcript of one of his comedy ablums. for someone as brilliant as he is, i expected more. but, even though i seen his act, i still laugh when i "reread," his book.

This book was very insightful and funny. Yes he did use some vulgar language but who doesn't? I would like for anyone to name one peson they know who hasn't cussed in the past two weeks. Chris discussed some very important issues in this book. He didn't just take a white or black persons side. This book gave me a new perspective on life. I now think before I talk and judge somebody. I had a hard time putting this book down. I recommened it to all of my friends and they all loved it too. Anyone who didn't like this book I think needs to come out of their pefect hiding space and come into the real world. That is exactly what Chris did.

I certainly enjoyed this book very, very much. My favorite part comes on page 30, when Chris discusses what slaves might have done if they were able to take vacations: "Massa Gave a Vacation. Where are you going to go?" "Round 'Back Where are you going to go to?" "The well. You should take your kids. It's nice over there." This man, I SWEAR, has to be the most honest man I've ever known of..Go out and read It!!

This was a book that had me laughing so hard on the train during my commute, some people thought I was crazy (which isn't saying too much considering my geographic area). Many others on the train said that they were going to get the book since it had me in stiches. Bascially, this was a real funny book. It wasn't "tired" or "insulting". I got the jokes... and Chris was pretty much on the mark with a lot of his observations.

Uggghh. Wow. This hurts. Man this was wretched. Stick to stand up little Chris. I mean, Letterman he ain't. The next Richard Pryar? this guy? Really? Man I don't see it at all. Same worn out material he was doing on SNL. Nothing new at all. He doesn't even have the good sense at least rip somone off for their material. Just blathers on like Paul Reiser. He makes Carrot Top look funny. Dice is a riot next to Rock. Stick to stand up.
