Product Description

Product Description

After twenty years of comfortable marriage, and with the kids finally off her hands, Sarah Lewis realises she has filled the washing machine once too often. Surely there must be more to life than this? What she wants is an adventure - a wild, unpredictable adventure - but her husband, good old reliable David, is very happy with the status quo. Besides, he's got his old car to tinker with, when he eventually gets round to it. What Sarah needs is a gap year for grown-ups - and she wants to do it alone. Confident the grass must be greener elsewhere, she heads for France, leaving behind a devastated and resentful David, faced with an empty house and a freezer full of meals-for-one. But is life really better on the other side of the fence? With a gorgeous French man demanding her company and a renewed joie de vivre, Sarah certainly seems to think so. But then a catastrophe threatens to de-rail much more than Sarah's little adventure. Pretty soon, she begins to wonder whether gap years are for grown-ups after all...

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous read, 11 July 2008
By Lisa Martin (East Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews

Another wonderfully poignant and witty page turner by Annie Sanders. The characters are wonderfully sketched, and the main protaganists are extrememly loveable despite (and indeed because of) their faults.

With plenty of unexpected plot twists, I was totally hooked and stayed up way past my bedtime to find out how it would all be resolved.

Highly recommended :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good a Jimmy Choos, 20 July 2008
By Damaskcat (UK) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 50 REVIEWER)
I've read all the Annie Sanders books but the last two seem not to be as good as the early ones. I did finish this and bits of it were good. Sarah's state of mind at the start was realistic and I'm sure a lot of women would identify with her. David's behaviour was also well described. I thought the reasons which made Sarah go back to England were a little contrived to be topical, but that said the ending was satisfying and the sub plots were interesting. All the ingredients are there but I felt there was something missing - it just didn't do it for me. Not as good as Jimmy Choos or Warnings of Gales.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mid Life Saga - French Style!, 4 Mar 2009
By Donna Bright "Donna Louise" (Walsall,England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Gap Year for Grown-Ups (Paperback)
I gave this book 3 stars because at times I really struggled to finish it.
It starts off great, and the main character is instantly identifiable and the story very believable.
Its when the French bit starts that I lost interest - the plot twists were very formulaic, the characters one-dimensional and I nearly gave up reading I was so dis-interested in the outcome.
However due to short chapters and a relunctance to give up I continued. The story I felt could have been so much stronger and less obvious- as a holiday read its fine, as a good piece of fiction its sadly lacking.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow-paced
I picked this up with great expectations, having loved all her others. Although, I did enjoy it, I found it very slow paced. It wasn't a non-stop read like her others. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars The Gap Yeaer for Grown-Ups
I enjoyed all the other Annie Sanders books, but this one was one major disappointment. It was full of spelling mistakes and other errors, and it was a most boring read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will the grown ups ever get a grip? Gap year grit!
In this latest book the authors develop their considerable talents for compelling narrative and disarming humour. Read more
