Product Description

Product Description

For hundreds of years horses were the main way to transport goods across land, but in the twentieth century first steam and then internal combustion engines revolutionised road haulage. Chris Woodcock charts the history of motor road haulage in Britain, featuring the design and development of the vehicles, competition from the railways, and the coming of the motorway age. He also documents the services that kept the truckers going, from garage to transport cafe, and the men themselves. Illustrated throughout with period photographs, this is a feast of nostalgia for anyone who has enjoyed a career in the industry, and a real eye opener for anyone who has not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview, 7 July 2010
By Peter Jackson (Sheffield UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Road Haulage Industry (Shire Library) (Paperback)
Chris Woodcock covers the history of the tranport industry from horse and cart through to modern times and puts much of the changes into perspective in a very neat and clever way. His style of writing is easy to read and for those connected with the industry the smell of diesel permeates nicely! In just 56 pages one feels transported through time and having shared some of his personal experiences you will find - as I did - that you are sorry to finish it. A great addition to your library.
