This book is a very clear step-by-step guide to everything it aims to teach us. As an experience Windows user I was able to skim most of the book. For a Windows novice, however, this would make an excellent introduction to Visio, and Windows methodologies in general.

I was surprised to discover that the last 2 chapters are only on the CD, which is why it doesn't achive a 5-star rating. I haven't referenced the chapters on the PC as I had purchased another book to cover these topics in more depth anyway. However, I would probably not be able to run this CD on my work PC because of IT restrictions, and would have been frustrated if I had been trying to learn Visio on a plane or a train with no access to a PC.

The fact that the "Step-by-Step" series are always concise and easy-to-grasp made me buy this book. But it was a bad experience. The attached CD-ROM was faulty and simply didn't work. Amazon was kind enough to offer a refund.

Under normal circumstances, readers could cope without the CD. But the big problem here is that Chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12 of this book are exclusively in the CD-ROM. They are not in the printed book. Only Chapters 1 to 8 are in print. I just don't understand why Microsoft published it this way, and then included poor quality CD.

One must understand that this is a reference book.
And i will only use this as and when I get stuck.
Quick scan does not relieve any items which i wish to use visio for
Basic electric diagrams' / electronic diagrams
Which i am sure that visio can help with.

Practically useless 30 Mar. 2009

I got this book after transitioning from Autosketch to Visio Pro due to integration with other software.
I ordered this book after realizing that Visio is based on markedly different concepts than Autodesk products. This book is pretty much a clone of the material that is available for free at the Microsoft Visio website.
Anyone who has dabbled with CAD programs before will know that drawing aids like Snap, Alignment and Guides are rudimentary tools, without which, you have no hope of creating even a simple drawing - Try looking up Snap in the index, it's not there. Instead, the authors think that they can teach you the program by giving you step by step instructions on a few sample applications. These sample applications only take you to the most basic of steps and then leave you on your own.
Looking through the help menu will serve you way better.

Better books are available - buy one of them instead 19 Sept. 2009

I had a good experience with one of the "Step by Step" books a few years ago, but this one was pretty disappointing. The text and exercises are helpful only at the most basic level. While I knew it was an introductory book, I did not realize just HOW basic it would be. If you've never seen Visio before, you may find it of some use, but it will be of absolutely no value as a desk reference after it's been read.

In addition, it is supposed to be a paperback book with a CD that, in addition to practice files, includes an eBook version for the buyer's convenience. That makes a good selling point for this product, but it is misleading. Only 60% of the book is in hard copy, the remaining chapters are stored in individual PDF files on the accompanying CD along with the eBook (which also contains only 60% of the content). I did not expect or want to be tied to my desktop computer in order to read the last 40% of the book (a total of 4 chapters).

Overall, Microsoft Visio 2007 Step by Step was poor choice and I would not recommend it to anyone.

This books is great for beginners. I took a class in Visio and this is the book they used. Walks you through everything. Truly step by step and with pictures to guide you.

Thought it was very good 9 Jan. 2010

Despite the negative reviews of some others, I thought this book was more than satisfactory. I purchased it to do some training, and felt totally comfortable with the content and its presentation.

A Total Waste 31 May 2011

Format: Paperback
This book should not have been published by Microsoft Press.
I don't know if I got 14 cents worth of material out of this book, much less $14.00
Visio is a reasonably powerful piece of software, albeit that the real power is in the professional version.
This book is squarely aimed at people who are unfamiliar with any graphic software.
For professionals and amateurs who use graphics to visualize data - this book offers nothing.
Absolutely no attention has been paid to "Shape Data", and how thjat differentiates it from commonplace office SW - e.g., power point.

I don't mind if the first half of the book is dedicated to the novice user, but the second half should have been geared toward integration with Excel and Project.

Don't buy this book - you'll find better tutorials for free on YouTube
