5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin, 6 Nov 2006
By Ferdinand Peelen (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Texas Hold 'Em Poker : Begin and Win (Paperback)
I read this book in two days and made two summary sheets on the main contents tips and actions in the book. Mainly listing starting hands and what to do with them.

I'd only been playing under 200 online tournaments (single and multi table) in total before I read the book. Was getting better but felt I was struggling and not making money. Then I started playing games after reading this book with my summary sheets by my side. I was amazed, I promptly started making profits. This book really did make me win!

This book has really meant a hike in my level of play. In my case I was always calling the flop if I had a pocket ace regardless of what the other card was. Simply no longer doing that with a low kicker (with the odd exception) has made 100's of chips difference to my game per tournament.

Also the tips on behaviour on the table really helped. Mendelson suggests an assertive, almost arrogant attitude to get an edge over other players. When I was in a final showdown at a single table tournament after reading this book (one of 2 people left at the table) I did exaclty as Mendelson wrote and raised, re raised, went all in at the drop of a hat and totally had the other player intimidated. Worked like a charm!

I've now gone on to read other more elaborate poker books but the summary sheets I made as a result of reading this book always sit by my side when I'm playing. I know the contents by heart but when in doubt I still consult it.

I earned the low cost of this book back in a flash. A must have for players with limited experience. It will bust those habits that lose you money and install some profitable ones instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent short book for beginners, 2 Feb 2006
By Jimmy "city_lad" (London) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Texas Hold 'Em Poker : Begin and Win (Paperback)
I am an occasional player but to be honest I was never all that good - I was OK but never went into a game with anything approaching a strategy.

This book had changed all that - Mendelson writes clearly about the concepts and rarely gets bogged down in jargon. This in ideal for those thinking about playing or are not getting the best out of their play.

Unlike some of the other books on offer this deals with all aspects of the game - low limit home games, tournaments and the popular on-line poker sites. He offers excellent advice on which hands to play, and what to do with them when you have them.

He gives first class advice on when to call, when to raise and when to bluff (the answer to this is - if you are new NEVER).

At first glance you may think that it is a very short book - however Mendelson does not waste your time by endlessly repeating the same thing, nor does he fill pages with his personal exploits (save for when they are illustrative).

The great thing about this being a slim volume is that you can read it cover to cover in a day and then go back to those parts that you feel weak on and go over them again.

Overall: This will give you simple rules to follow allowing you to develop as a player without losing your shirt into the bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's TRUE but....., 17 July 2008

This review is from: Texas Hold 'Em Poker : Begin and Win (Paperback)
OK like a few people have stated on here .... follow the rules and you DO INDEED win. BUT and there is a but ..... one of the things stressed in this book is patience. The reason being is that if you follow the rules you will play maybe 1 hand every 10-15 minutes. The play in the book is very tight. It basically takes some hands that on average will allow you to win more often than you lose and that's the simple maths. You can't fault the book. The only problem I found is when I moved to bigger stakes tables people are far more likely to do the things that the book will tell you to fold for, and so your win average is cut to the bone. So you might say "Who cares...I'm winning" Well simply put if you want to play maybe 6 hands an hour and win 4-5 of them and that may mean just the pre-flop pot for a few dollars then go ahead. Most people play poker to win LOTS of money and for excitement. This is neither. Not sure where I go from here....maybe an advanced book or maybe something in tournament play.
