"'The author's skilful melding of archival research and unfolding revelations makes a gripping story.' Annette Kobak, Sunday Times"

Product Description

Gerhard Bast was found shot in an abandoned bunker in northern Italy in April 1947. A middle-ranking SS officer and an early member of the Nazi Party, Bast had been on the run since the end of the war after being involved in atrocities in Slovakia. In attempting to piece together his father's life, Martin Pollack assembles the memories of family and friends, carefully reconstructing their lives. Pollack digs deeply into the archives and travels to the places important in the history of the Bast family and in his father's Nazi career. This is a provocative and devastating memoir which also reveals Europe's darkest past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading if not buying., 20 Dec 2006
This book is an elegant portrait of an often-overlooked aspect of the Third Reich, namely Austrian, whish was no less virulent in parts as it's neighbour.
The author's father was an Austrian member of the SS and was an archetypal member of a student duelling fraternity with the mandatory scars (and associated with Kaltenbrunner). But this book is a touching journey back in time as Pollack tries to find a father he can love.
The author displays a clear understanding of the geo-socio-political aspects of Styrian Austria and the result of his research is a joy to read.
I was surprised that no-one who had read this book had felt compelled to review it until now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A painful truth , 9 Jan 2008

I read this book in its Czech translation but I doubt it varies much from the English version. I have to say I enjoyed it very much, as it provides a fascinating if often overlooked insight into Austria's involvement in arguably the darkest period of Europe's modern history. My Austrian friends have confirmed the uncomfortably truthful nature of the findings of Pollack, as they themselves have had to confront some painful truths of their family history and the involvement of their grandparents in the Nazi regime. A very relevant book for anyone interested in 20th century history and central Europe.

This sort of book cannot be descibed as enjoyable but it is very interesting, well written and certainly worth a read.
