3.0 out of 5 stars Light but entertaining and very readable, 25 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Having not read for a long time I found this book really easy to read. It was amusing and I enjoyed reading it a lot. For those who like the 'murder-crime' books it is almost a more realistic and believable story of problems faced when trying to become a serial murderer! The protagonist is likeable and buffonish, and that makes the book such a good read.
After reading this book I decided to read more of Williams' books. Definitely one to read if you are not a heavy reader and want to get back into reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful and funny comic novel, 3 Jan 2009
By Mark Slattery (London, UK) - See all my reviews

This is my first experience of Nigel Williams' writing and it will not be my last. This is a superbly written and very funny book, at times touching too. The praise on the dust jacket is in high order and justified.

It's a tale of the incompetent hen-pecked husband who tries to poison his wife and fails so miserably that unintended consequences flow, and the misery deepens like a coastal shelf, as does the humour... and there are some delicious twists of course as the absurdity collapses in on itself and it ends, fittingly, on a slightly serious note. It is all superbly delivered. So, if it 'seems like a good idea at the time' - don't!

My only quibble is that Williams didn't, in my opinion, spend enough time establishing how Henry Farr, the anti-hero, actually 'suffers' from the dominating wife he plans to do away with. That part of the pantomime you have to take on trust to some extent. But what a joyful read it is and delightfully silly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Get on with it, 16 Sep 2009
By E. Shaw "Kokoschka's_cat" (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews

I wanted to like this book, having so much enjoyed his Hatchett and Lycett, but there were moments when I just wanted him to get on with it. In the end I thought it was amusing and, at times, inventive and enjoyable, but on the whole it was a couple of funny episodes built up into a novel - he went on with the same running jokes a little too long. This was his first novel and he obviously learned how to broaden things out to much better effect later on.
