First Sentence
For most people, the Depression began on that manic morning of October 29, to be known forever as Black Tuesday, when the easy, buoyant era of the twenties - the roaring, turbulent, high-flying twenties - came to a dead stop. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving and readable depiction of a country in crisis, 2 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Great Depression: 1929-1939 (Paperback)
This is above all a really good read. Berton presents a sweeping and comprehensive picture of what was essentially a young country caught in the grip of a global depression. The challenges of hard times tested the nation's attitudes towards its own people (some of whom it had yet to take fully to heart - a contrast with the studiously diverse Canada of today) and also its view of the country's place among other nations. Most importantly Berton combines brilliantly the detail of world events with human scale stories and vivid characterisation,in a very readable style. He's a master of the genre - I only wish he'd turn his attention to British history.
