Product Description

The woman missing for five years. The Crime Scene Investigator who finds her. And the serial killer who wants them both dead … When Boston CSI Darby McCormick finds a raving and emaciated woman hiding at the scene of a violent kidnap, she runs a DNA search to identify the Jane Doe. The result confirms she was abducted five years earlier and has somehow managed to escape from the dungeon in which she’s been caged. With a teenage couple also missing and Jane Doe seriously ill, the clock is ticking for Darby as she hunts for the dungeon before anyone else disappears or dies. And when the FBI takes over the investigation, it becomes clear that a sadistic serial killer has been on the prowl for decades – and is poised to strike again at any moment. A killer with links to horrors that Darby has desperately tried to bury in her past …

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!, 3 Oct 2007
By J.Flood (Dublin,Ireland) - See all my reviews
The Missing had me hooked from start to finish! The storyline, of the police & FBI searching for a serial killer, who had been abducting women for years, never flagged, or got monotonous, at any stage in the book. This is not always the case with books of this genre. It did not get too bogged down in technical detail, either. The pace is quite relentless, with something incident/discovery cropping up, at the end of almost every chapter, making you want to read on further.

I felt the characters were quite believeable, also, from the police to the nasty serial killer. This book was defintely worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best thriller in a long time, 23 May 2007
I thought the pace was fast and held an elemant of reality, usually such books do not cover the cost of investigations but in the real world this is so. When an interaction is required and investigations put forward the cost of who is footing the bill is mentioned which i liked.
The ending was drawn out but relelvant and this is the best thriller I have read in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Tense Thriller, 26 May 2007
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The author was born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts and attended college at the University of new Hampshire and in his own words "tried to study, of all things computer science" and was less than successful at it. He quickly switched his major to English with the emphasis on creative writing. He now lives just outside Boston with his wife and son and is at work on his second novel in the Darby McCormick series.

It is always nice to find a new author and Chris Mooney is certainly new to me and although I am an avid reader of virtually anything, thrillers are not the first thing that I would pull off the book shelf. What a pleasant surprise, the book is well written, well structured and the characters are not only well rounded, but believable. In a book of this type it is always a temptation for the author to include as much gratuitous sex, violence, blood, you name it, they include it, as possible. But this novel strikes a good balance and is all the more scary and thrilling because of that.

When CSI Darby McCormick finds an emaciated woman, clearly not in her right mind hiding at the scene of a violent kidnap, she runs a DNA test to identify the woman. The resulting test confirms that the woman was the victim of an abduction that occurred over five years ago. She has somehow managed to escape from the clutches of the person or persons who have kept her caged up.

With a teenage girl also missing and the woman seriously ill Darby find herself with a plate full of trouble and little time to find where the raving woman has been incarcerated before someone else fall victim. When the FBI butt in on the case it some becomes clear that a serial killer has been on the prowl for years and they are certainly not going to stop now . . .
