I was interested the real life behind Laura Ingalls Wilder's books but this book didn't really enlighten me. Much of it is a retelling of the events in her books in a less engaging manner than when she writes herself. There is very little analysis and no examinations of either the context in which she lived nor the relationships within or outside the family. Events are taken very much at Wilder's own appraisal, there is no real investigation of the hardship suffered by the family and the impact on them and I am left feeling none the wiser. Sometimes he quotes other sources but never properly - for example he says 'a visitor said' without saying who that vistor was and in what context they said anything. I felt Anderson was too enamoured with the books to write a proper biography.

William Anderson has written an interesting and enlightening book about one of America's best loved authors. Although I had read all of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, I had never really developed a sense for who she was until reading Anderson's biography. For anyone who loves history and the pioneer way of life this is an excellent book. For young readers, it is an education to a much simpler way of life, and the answer to what happened to Laura as an older adult.

The book was interesting, some extra detailed information that was not in other books I have read.
I was slightly disappointed in some of the context, just being copied from the Little House series but a worthwhile read if you are interested in all aspects of this historical time.
