I saw this last year at the Curzon Mayfair in London with 3 Mexican friends. It charmed us all, with 2 of us at least vowing to see it again if possible, and anyway to buy it the minute it came out on DVD. This was superb and sensitive acting and a masterpiece of direction, with a bitingly perceptive and relevant script of great warmth and humour. It achieves something quite rare: it's achingly funny, but never leaves you with the emptiness that can sometimes result from laughing at the absurdities inherent in relationships of all kinds; you'll walk out feeling whole, warmed, even celebratory of your own humanity. I just wish this self-effacing, yet treasure of a little film could win the praise it deserves from a wider audience. Go see!

ONLY HUMAN is a comedy about cross culturalism that'll leave you chuckling all the way home.

Set in Spain, Leni (Marian Aguilera), a yuppie Jewish woman living on her own, brings fiance Rafi (Guillermo Toledo), a college professor, home to dinner to meet the rest of the folks. In the high rise apartment in which the family lives are Leni's stereotypical Jewish mother Gloria (Norma Aleandro), her younger brother David (Fernando Ramallo), who annoys everyone with his recent conversion to strict fundamental Judaism, her sultry and promiscuous belly-dancer sister Tania (Maria Botto), Tania's precocious pre-adolescent daughter Paula (Alba Molinero), who, at Rafi's arrival, is playing at being pregnant, and Leni's blind and confused grandfather Dudu (Max Berliner), a concentration camp survivor who fought the British in Palestine and who treasures an old (and occasionally loaded) Enfield rifle from the good old days. Leni's father Ernesto (Mario Martin) is not yet back from the office, and David's pet duckling is in the bathroom's bidet. The stage is thus set.

Rafi and Leni share a secret; the former is a Palestinian. At first, Rafi is cagey when revealing his origins to the rest of the clan and they think him an Israeli Jew. But in a private moment with Gloria, the engaged couple reveal the secret. Mom's initial reaction is an emotional outburst; the relationship won't work because the differences go too deep. But, after Leni appeals to her sense of fair play, Gloria hugs Rafi, welcomes him to the family, and asks that he defrost the dinner's first course, a soup, which Rafi finds in a very large tub frozen rock solid in the freezer.

This is a good comedy. Well paced and not too long. About a night in crazy Spanish Jewish family. It sounds very obscure yet is anything but; the jokes come thick and fast, varying from slapstick to political. It's a little bit rude but not too outrageous.

There's never a dull moment and it even made me laugh out loud a couple of times.

Yes, I know it's usually French Farce but this is just as good. Nutty characters in a small apartment with a big secret to reveal. It's a perfect, and funny, display of human nature in panic. Lovely.

I so much enjoyed this warm and witty portrait of the various shades of human attitudes in the life of a disfunctional Catalan family, that I have recommended it to several friends and shall watch it again (and again). The juxtaposition of the 2 main characters is a refreshing take on Arab/Jewish relations and all sorts of human foibles are shown in an affectionate and hilarious light.

An intelligent and funny Spanish film with international appeal. A good story and superb acting from the small ensemble cast. No matter the language or ideas nationality, a good plot and well crafted storytelling makes for an enjoyable film. Little wonder this film got funding from the UK film council. I am glad I decided to give this one a viewing.

A humble tale that manages to be homely and absolutely hilarious whilst being stylish at the same time. The characters are so engaging that I miss them! I've watched this four times now and I don't normally do that but this certainly merits it.
