First of all, this is a great complete book with all the cocktails you need. The famous ones, all their variations, with an explanation about their origin and a comment about their taste. Of course each one has a picture, and the author advises you a particular brand for each spirit used. But what I find strange is sometimes his choices in spirit : he recommends Bacardi Superior rum when a light rum is needed... Bacardi is well known to be one of the worst rum ever, even though it's wildly sold all over the world (just because of the massive promotion campaign, not because of the taste). It's a harsh disgusting rum, and Havana Club is way better in taste, for the same price... He also recommends Zubrowska vodka, which is in my opinion a budget vodka, it's not bad but it's not good either, and for the same price, vodkas such as Finlandia or even Russian Standard are better choices.
So you can follow his cocktails receipes, but when it comes to picking a brand, follow your own tastes. Sometimes he'll advise you a bad cheap brand, and sometimes an incredibly expensive brand (like zacapa old rum, la fée parisienne absinth or VSOP courvoisier cognac, they're all good of course, but best tasted neat, not in cocktails...) that could easily be replaced by a cheaper one. After all it's about cocktails, and a cocktail should be affordable.
