Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Solution Many newer DSLR cameras now offer a method to correct this issue: they allow you to store auto-focus correction data for several of your most important lenses. This feature is likely to become more common, and appear in other camera types. SpyderLensCal was designed to aid in correcting the auto-focus on your camera and lens combinations and storing them in your camera's custom settings.

Feature
SpyderLensCal provides photographers with a fast, reliable method of measuring the focus performance on camera and lens combinations. It allows photographers to obtain razor-sharp focusing, using modern DSLR autofocus micro-adjustment. The SpyderLensCal device is affordably priced, compact, lightweight and durable, with integrated level and tri-pod mount.

Benefit
SpyderLensCal allows photographers to easily calibrate their interchangeable lenses and recent DSLR bodies. There is no need to ship lenses and bodies back to the manufacturer any longer if you have the tools to do it yourself. Performing a Lens Calibration on each of your key auto-focus lenses can improve the number of usable shots from a day's shooting. And with a rugged, portable device such as SpyderLensCal, photographers can carry it on site or even on safari, so that lens calibration can be checked and adjusted if hard use or extreme weather may have caused changes.

3.0 out of 5 stars works but pricey 24 Jun 2011
By busboy
Does what it says on the tin but at the end of the day it's a bit of plastic with some lines on it. You could make your own quite easily. I use canon lenses and they did need a small adjustment. Worth buying if a few people would buy it to share (after all you are going to calibrate once or twice a year) but expensive for what it is. Happy shooting.

This only arrived on my door mat this morning. It was a literally a snap to set it up. I had my camera, lenses and Lenscal all ready within 10mins of it's arrival. I have checked every lens I poses which is 12 of them ranging from 24mm f/1.8 wide angle prime through to a 70-200mm f/2.8 with Nikon, Sony & Samsung Lenses for my 3 full frame cameras. I was fairly sure that at least two of my lenses where not performing as they should do but as they are both over 10yrs old it wasn't a surprise. Anyway, it's just a matter of setting it up on a level, taking a photo of the image, zooming in to the image as far as you to look for accuracy. Then using the plus/minus lens calibration in the cameras menu to alter it as required. 3 of my lenses needed alteration albeit slightly but having taken a second image with each lens once changed there was an obvious improvement. This took me a total of about 30mins and has saved be a fortune as Sony alone wanted 150 just to check out one lens. I can now check my lenses when ever I wish, the item folds flat so it can be carried anywhere with you on a shoot just in case you may need it and it's so simple to do.
But do remember, unless you have a camera that is able to re-calibrate the lens whilst it is mounted to your camera obviously, there is no point in purchasing this item. It would probably work out cheaper to upgrade your camera to one that does than send all your lenses away for checking. Pro-Photographer Mark Eddiford, Blackpool, UK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use 11 Jun 2013

Works great and folds down to nothing...
Good instructions- and it took only 2 minuts to calibrate my first lens....!

The printing on the ruler isn't as sharp as I wish- but a minor problem.

An interesting contraption but nowhere near as useful as a plain old lens test chart. This thing is small. The thing on the left of the ruler is only 10cm wide. The patterns on it are not detailed enough for checking on accurate focusing. I has a spirit level - but why? If you have a lens test chart then all you need to do to ensure that you are perpendicular to the chart is to make sure the outline of it is parallel to the edges of the frame. There is no need for either to be leveled - just perpendicular. So you have a slanting ruler that can tell you if the true focus is behind or in front. But you can find that out by moving the manual focus ring. Please save your money and buy a good lens chart instead and then not only can you adjust focus but you can get a good idea of the lens quality as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars difficult to align 14 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase
The SpyderLensCal is a nice product, well built and easy to assembly. It is not flawless, because of the lackinng of any way to control the perfect parallelism between the LensCal and the camera.
But once in position, the use is simple and very precise.
