I bought these for friends in Zimbabwe, which regularly suffers 12 hour black-outs because the lack of infrastructure. The manufacturers claim up to 4 hours decent reading light, and up to 8 hours working light, on a full day's charge.

I wasn't able to check that, but I did try the lantern out at night. The light is indeed good enough to read by, and to work by, though it has that cold white LED glare that is not very comfortable for a long time.

Handling-wise, it's easy to switch on, even in the dark. The handle is a bit fiddly, as it clicks into various positions, but you get used to it. The shape and look are perfectly acceptable in a living area.

I have bought six so far, and am waiting to see how my friends find them to use on a longer-term basis. But, so far, so good, esp. for the price.

This product is much better than I expected. It is good quality and the light is long lasting and bright. The 2 light settings is a very useful feature and the handle can be used to prop the light up at various different angles. I think I'll buy another one.

It works beautifully! So much so I have just ordered a dozen more for friends overseas suffering power cuts.

I'd done the research, I'd read the awards it had earned, now I'd bought one - and it arrived on a dark, January morning in Reading, UK. You need to charge it fully before first use, and the tiny red charging LED glows dimly even on an overcast, grey-skied UK day, through glass. To fully charge the battery and take opportunity of two sunny afternoons that followed, I didn't turn it on until 1 grey + 2 full-sun days had passed and was very impressed. Press the luminous power button once to illuminate, and again to give a slightly brigher light. The light emanates from a single white-light LED and passes through frosted, translucent plastic to scatter as much as possible.

I admit bias in this review, I have always loved torches. This one more than met my expectations and I spent an hour reading a book by it's light quite comfortably, and that was on the first (lowest light) setting. The red LED charging light shows a feeble glow (charge) even under a modern energy-efficient light bulb, presumably because of the ultra-violet emitted. Of no relevance to this review, it also glows rather fiercely if it's anywhere near a little desk lamp that I bought 20 years ago in Edinburgh .. hmm, perhaps shouldn't get too close to that one. Haven't had it long enough to say how long it lasts but it's designed to be 8 hours after a full day's charge, and I believe that's intended to be an Indian/African day of sunlight. It's lightweight - only 300g - and is impressively sturdy. As mentioned above, I have placed an order for a dozen more (at £10 each).

By comparison with the recent wave of dynamo-torches in the UK, well, there *is* no comparison - the D.Light S10 is miles ahead. There's literally nothing like it on the UK market at the moment for the high quality and incredibly reasonable price, in the short time I have had it I simply cannot fault it.

These work really well. They are really bright and charge up quickly much to my surprise as the solar lamps I have used before have been very feeble. We took them to Malawi and Mali as gifts for people with no electricity so they will be very useful.

Have owned one of these for nearly a year now & have just ordered 3 more for Christmas presents!

Useable straight out of the box, the light weight unit has 3 settings through one button. 1. Normal light (8 hours with full charge)2. High power (4 hours with full charge) & 3. "off".

Place the unit on a window sill with the panel pointing towards the outside & you will notice a small light pointing towards you. This lights up when charging.

After a full days charging turn it on.

The light is a white light which although not warming is very effective for even reading. If you hang the light, say from a tree branch with it's flexible handle, the light is cast over a large area & truly impressive.

The unit can also be used as a torch (hold the unit & use the base as a torch light).

Very, very impressive, especially as the unit charges on even dull days. Great for in the garden, on the boat & for use when camping.
An ideal piece of equipment during a power cut.

Highly recommended. A solar lamp that does what we've always wanted them to.

I have bought several of these lamps for friends and family and they love them... they're bright, lightweight, well-designed and a price-wise a very good deal. They charge up easily on the windowsill and last for about 8 hours. My mother loves it so much she's decided to contribute her winter fuel allowance money to buy 40 of them to give away to friends and pass on the word. When I hear about people going to developing countries I ask them to take some with them to give local people who live off grid or who have unreliable electricity supplies. For just £10 they can change peoples' lives!

This really works. Developed using an investment from Christian Aid to give people in developing countries a cheap form of lighting, it works very well in this country too!

It charged quite happily on a windowsill in Edinburgh in December. I had gone looking for a charger to use with the input there is on the lantern, but even Maplin didn't sell one, but having actually used it, I don't think you'd need one unless you lived completely in the dark.
