4.0 out of 5 stars An "oldie but Goodie" 20 Jan 2013
By Magyar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Book has a copyright date of 1955. But descriptions talk about cars in the 60s. Also, I don't know how many 6 lane Super Highways there were in '55.
Book is about a multiple car, fatal accident; the people involved and the impact the accident had on the survivors. Main character is a successful architect who is taking a forced vacation. His wife had been killed in another auto accident, and his work is suffering. There is also 2 Bandits fleeing with $40,000 from a bank robbery, and a sole survivor of a family of four, who needs to be rescued from a greedy relative. I'd say this is one of McDonald's Better early works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Highway of death. 13 Jun 2013
By Michael G. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Cry Hard Cry Fast is an unusual kind of book. It's about a multivehicle traffic accident and the fates of all the parties involved. Now John D. MacDonald has a pretty good track record when it comes to stories about strangers being brought together by adversity (see The Damned and Murder in the Wind for example). Unfortunately, Cry Hard Cry Fast doesn't rise to the quality of MacDonald's better works.

In the first half of the book we learn about the many ill-fated characters. What they're doing on the road in the first place and what they experience when the accident occurs. The second half of the book is about those who survive and how their lives are all profoundly changed.

The book does have its moments. I liked the storyline about the sociopathic bank robber. But by and large, this novel comes off as overly contrived and more than a little peculiar. For diehard John D. MacDonald fans only.
