Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Convenient for up to 6 people, the innovative Extreme Temperature Control technology of this slow cooker means that the pot can be used for cooking on the stove. This is particularly useful and convenient when browning meat, for instance, as this can now be done in the same pot, as opposed to transferring from one pot to another.

1.0 out of 5 stars not really a slow cooker, 19 Aug 2007
By J. Skillen (UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I get the feeling that this slow cooker was designed by someone who not only have never used one before, but also never cooks!

I have used a Tower slow cooker for many years, and it finally gave up. This must have been over 25 years old.

So far I have been very disappointed with this replacement. First of all, it isn't slow. It is actually very hot and fast! It brings the water up to boiling temperature and keeps it there, both on low and high. A true slow cooker should have the temperature under boiling on low, and on high the water should not be producing lots of surface bubbles, but should be a slow boil with only occasional small bubbles breaking the surface.

This slow cooker would not be suitable for making clear stock where it is important for the water to not boil!

Secondly, there is a lot of wasted heat. Way too much! The surface of my Tower slow cooker never got hot to the touch. This one is so hot that it would burn if you held you hand against it, and it raised the temperature of the room it was in so much heat was lost. Unfortunately there is no point in making a little jacket for it like you would a hot water cylinder as there is no thermostat, and it would only result in the food being cooked at an even higher temperature. So this isn't environmentally friendly at all! You may as well make an old fashioned hay box!

Thirdly, the lid doesn't fit very well. I have to fiddle with it to get it in a position where it fits correctly.

And fourthly, the pot being black you can't actually see what is happening inside properly. For instance, you can't clearly see the level of water when you are pouring it in until it is nearly at the top!

I bought this because I needed a large one to take a gammon, and there seemed to be only two on the market. But I am now going to scour the second hand market for an old Tower one. A true slow cooker.

I can't understand why the manufactures are not making their products fit for purpose.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough!, 29 Nov 2007
By silversubmarine (Iver Heath - Bucks , UK.) - See all my reviews
When we got this product, it didn't inspire confidence. The lid didn't fit very well. Anyway, first use, the machine started flashing all its lights after an hour, so I reset it, and it did the job, albeit it seemed to be too hot. Second use was for a four-hour cook. After two hours it started flashing the lights, so I reset it. After one minute, the lights again.
Phoning the Rival Helpline got the answer that the machine was overheating and to return it for a refund, which I did. I will not be buying Rival products again, and neither should you!
