As with all Hugh F-Ws books, it has great recipes and is a delight to read. Notes on foraging could be clearer and the book would definitely benefit from more detailed plant descriptions for identification. Overall, I would recommend the book for the intrepid cook, but if you're either a supermarket junkie or ecommerce revolutionary, then this book may not be the one for you.

Both this book and the DVD of the same I highly recommend.
Hugh undertakes an amazing journey when it come to gaining wild food for free, bartering or a little work on the odd farm or the like as recompence for his labour.
We may not be able to go about doing the things he did around Britain, but we can small-time in our own locality.

"A Cook on the Wild Side" is one of Hughs earlier works, coming slightly before the dawn of the River Cottage era, and dealing solely with wild and foraged foods found in the British Isles. Quite simply, this is a fine book, well written and organised with some sumptuous photography, very much in the spirit of Roger Phillips. It is a worthy addition to those other classic foragers guides - Richard Mabeys "Food for Free" and Roger Phillips "Wild Food". Essential.
