John Stewart is an unrecognised pioneer of what is now called Americana. This is a 1975 live concert in Phoenix where, for some reason, he was a superstar while the rest of America ignored him. There's a load of his early classics on this along with some great inter song storytelling that displays his California cool humour. It's an album of songs about small town people without the usual small town certainties. At times it really rocks, at other times it's as delicate as gossamer. But it pisses all over the likes of Gram Parsons who was just a rich boy junkie slumming it. This is the authentic voice of mid America.

This is Johns first live album and is a gem. It shows John at the top of his form and contains a good cross section of his work to date. His great sense of humour comes across and his band are faultless. Listening to this album makes one realise just how talented John was and how underated. Ive got bootlegs of other John Stewart concerts from around this time and the quality of his performances never varies.

This has got to be one of the best live albums ever !!

Stewart has been making music for forty years or more and is

be up there with greats of country rock with a stream of excellent albums behind him.

This concert comes at his first peak in the mid seventies

with the best tracks from early albums.

They are all here ... CALIFORNIA BLOODLINES, YOU CANT LOOK BACK

etc .... all brilliant songs carried by his superb voice and simple backing of guitars/drums

anyone who is interested in country rock should own this

masterpiece.

The more I listen to this man's music, the more ashamed, enraged and saddened I become that he is not up there and recognised with the very top singer-songwriters. This album (recorded in 1974 when he was in his prime) is a good taster of what he can do - he can break your heart or set your heart thumping or rock with the best. As a live album it's as good as they get, even though the editing is a little strange - there is a clear "natural" end but then 2 extra songs are tagged on. Use it, though, as a springboard to explore the full catalogue of this truly talented artist and you will be rewarded many many times over. I was lucky enough to see him live in York some years ago in a fairly small venue but I thought then and think now he should have been filling massive theatres - unfortunately that's never going to happen now but this CD gives a real feeling of what it should have been like. Pure genius!
